The Serenade of 2005: A Vintage Echo

Though the legendary Domaine Leroy needs scant introduction among oenophiles, it is the 2005 vintage of its Vosne Les Genaivrieres that we find particularly poised for the sagacious investor's portfolio. The season's serendipitous clime - a temperate spring followed by an ideally warm summer - carried into autumn with grace, ensuring grapes of exceptional ripeness and balance.

The result, bottled in this profound expression from Vosne-Romanée, is a Pinot Noir that exudes confidence and poise. The 2005 uniquely captures that ephemeral equilibrium — a perfumed nose layered with aromatics of cherry, delicate violets, and a whispered hint of damp earth. On the palate, one marvels at the structured tannins clasping velvety fruit; a symphony of flavors where each note resonates with intention and finesse.

From just outside the winery and across the road from the Clos de Reas, Leroy’s 2005 Vosne-Romanee Aux Genaivrieres displays resin- and spice-tinged cassis and plum aromatics. Lovely dark berries, black truffles, moss, subtle muskiness and animality mark its very ‘05 and very noir palate, like an expansive, magic forest of flavors. The wine finishes with remarkable refinement and delicacy of plum and cherry fruit and a continuation of myriad mysterious fungal, scrub and animal shadings. Flatteringly creamy, it, however, shows a more tender and less obviously rich, sweet personality than most of Leroy’s wines. Importer: Martine’s Wines. Novato, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400
