By Domaine de Pegau

2000 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Laurence from Domaine de Pegau, Rhone

In the often-mystifying world of fine wine investment, few bottles bear such gravitas as the 2000 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Laurence from Domaine de Pegau. A majestic showing from Rhone, this cuvée not only parades an expressive terroir but also possesses a unique character distinctive of its exceptional vintage.

Transcending Time, Transitioning Palates

This revered bottle stands as a compelling testament to the longevity and complexity inherent in earnestly made Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The considered cultivation of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre grapes evokes an extraordinary tapestry of flavours that have transcended the two decades since their harvest.

As one delves into the profound depths of this wine, you are met with an exquisite medley of Provencal herbs and liquorice enlivened by a spirited drive of dark fruits. This is choreographed with subtlety alongside notes of tobacco and earth, offering a seemingly infinite finish that delights savvy wine investors and connoisseurs alike.

The Millennia Vintage: A Dance Between Sun and Grape

In the year 2000 conditions in the vineyard aligned serendipitously, creating a remarkable equilibrium between luscious ripeness and acid retention in the grapes. The resulting wine encapsulates refinement yet robustness, complexity yet accessibility, traits appreciated in the realm of high-quality collection wines. A deft hand was required during this hot growing season to ensure balance was maintained throughout vinification, achieving what many consider to be one of Domaine de Pegau's triumphs.

For those seeking a wise investment or merely basking in the grandeur of a phenomenal bottle, 2000 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Laurence from Domaine de Pegau is a serious contender. Its exceptional vintage ensures substantial interest, while its consistent performance affirms its worthiness as an investable wine asset.

The world of quality and boutique wines is vast, yet always remember to return to the pillars that hold it aloft. Domaine de Pegau has withstood time and trends, a beacon for those discerning investors who understand that virtue comes in the bottle, lingered over a meal or positioned for future dividends.

Given how well the 1998 Cuvee Laurence is performing out of bottle, I might be underestimating the 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence. It exhibits better integration of wood than previous vintages, even though no new oak is used. Full-bodied, powerful, and backward, it requires further upbringing. Layered and rich, it will undoubtedly merit a mid-ninety point score when released next year. This is one of the benchmarks for traditionally-made Chateauneuf du Pape. Paul Feraud, a classmate of Henri Bonneau, is still involved in the running of this estate, but he has given more and more responsibility to his charming, talented daughter, Laurence. Readers looking for uncompromising Chateauneuf du Pape that can age for two decades need look no further than Pegau. Their primary vineyard plots are well-placed lieux-dits called Monpertuis, Rayas, and La Crau, the latter being the parcel from which the bulk of Pegau's wine emerges.
