2020 Lascombes from Chateau Lascombes, Margaux, Bordeaux, France
In the annals of notable vintages hailing from the Médoc, the 2020 Lascombes from Chateau Lascombes asserts its distinct position with poise and elegance. Being no stranger to the wine's lineage, my anticipated sampling of this young vintage was met with an intricate dance of complex flavours unique to this year's offering.
A Year of Climatic Contrast
The growing season for 2020 was a narrative of extremes, with Bordeaux facing significant climatic vicissitudes. With an early bud break due to warm spring, followed by summer's dry spells potentially imposing drought stress, the meticulous winegrowers at Chateau Lascombes navigated a potential viticultural tightrope. Yet it was these exacting conditions that laid the foundations for a vintage possessing an arresting charm and depth.
Investment-Worthy Elegance
The 2020 Lascombes showcases the astuteness of precise wine-making endeavour—ensuring that potential investors are rewarded with a wine of promising ageing trajectory. The blend, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with lush Merlot and a hint of Petit Verdot, offers structure alongside opulent textures, suggesting the wine will unfurl beautifully in patient cellars.
Characteristic dark fruit notes are underpinned by a subtle yet persistent tannic backbone, while accents of violet and liquorice weave through to create a tessellated flavour profile indicative of Margaux's terroir. The judicious use of oak has imparted a gracious spiced nuance without overshadowing the genuine character of the fruit. The finish is harmonious; a testament to a judicious confluence between nature's gifts and winemaker artistry.
In sum, this is a Margaux not only reflective of its esteemed pedigree but also exemplary of 2020's singularity. For those looking to diversify their portfolio with Bordeaux's latest offerings, the 2020 Lascombes from Chateau Lascombes stands proud as an investable beacon amidst the revered palatescape of fine wines.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Lascombes comes skipping out of the glass with bright, cheery scents of raspberry coulis, blackberry preserves and fresh blackcurrants, plus suggestions of pencil shavings, dried roses and charcuterie with a waft of bouquet garni. The medium to full-bodied palate has great tension and energy, delivering crunchy red and black fruit layers and a firm, grainy frame, finishing long with an herbal lift.
