1997 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, Pauillac, Bordeaux

A wine that has beguilingly traversed the avenues of time, the 1997 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste is a testimony to the resilience and elegance of Pauillac terroir. A year noted for its climatic challenges, 1997 bestowed upon Bordeaux a vintage that demanded skill and precision to harness its potential. With time, the tannins have softened and integrated seamlessly with the fruit, rendering a compelling snapshot of the estate's capability in an underappreciated year.

The Alchemy of Vintage Variance

While 1997 may not be lauded as the most illustrious vintage, it is occasions such as these where the emphasis on a wine's provenance – Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste’s unwavering commitment to quality – comes to the fore. The year 1997 was beset by gusts of unpredictability, climaxing with an early harvest in September. Making astute judgement calls was paramount; Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste exhibited such acuity in buckets and spades.

A Definitive Expression of Time and Place

The epitome of Pauillac character, this 1997 Grand Puy Lacoste unfolds gracefully with mature notes hinting at cedar and tobacco, laced with a velvety cassis core so emblematic of its heritage. The wine makes a sincere nod to its ancestry yet stands in its own right; a chalice brimful of tertiary complexity. Mint and truffle aromas interlace with a quiet assertion of oak, fostering an aura that is nuanced as it is commanding.

The 1997 vintage from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste encapsulates an investment opportunity often reserved for those more eminent years but should not be overlooked by the discerning investor looking to add breadth to their portfolio. This wine possesses a charm that is at once sumptuous and cerebral – a narrative spun from a year when meticulous vineyard stewardship triumphed over nature's caprices.

In summation, while others chase the echoes of illustrious vintages, let us not elude the quiet opulence of this steady-handed creation. The 1997 Grand Puy Lacoste offers both a discourse in Bordeaux's storied lineage and an anchor point for investment potential that prudently veers off the trodden path.

First tasted in July 2000 where I find it "a little chunky" and a Grand Puy Lacoste suitable for early drinking. Developing beautifully, showing delight pencil-lead and tobacco aromas by Oct-03, a "classic" claret. Still great at the GPL vertical in June 2005. A very attractive cedar, pencil lead nose with excellent definition and focus. The palate has a soft entry, smooth and more velvety than other recent vintages. The Merlot really balances this wine out, makes it a more lush and sensuous GPL than normal. A great drinking 1997.

The tell-tale blackberry/cassis character is well-displayed in this dark ruby/purple-colored wine. There is excellent ripe fruit, soft tannin, low acidity, and a delicious, easy-going personality. Although it will not make "old bones," it is a ripe, soft, attractive, evolved Bordeaux for consuming over the next 8-9 years.
