1999 Grand Puy Lacoste
By Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste
1999 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, Pauillac, Bordeaux
The turn of the millennium bore witness to a commendable offering from the esteemed left bank: the 1999 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste. Distinctly Pauillac in its poise, this vintage encapsulates the tenor of an oft-overlooked year overshadowed by the heralded 2000 millésime.
Nuanced Elegance: A Testament to Time's Caress
I recall the initial outpouring of this wine, greeted with ardent anticipation yet cloaked in an understanding that it was not fated to sit amongst the headline-stealers of the decade. Astonishingly though, time has indeed been kind to this unassuming bottling. Upon revisiting, one finds that it has unfurled beautifully, a tapestry of mature berry notes, sous-bois and touches of leather that dance with a finesse belying its years.
Stellar Conditions: A Vintage Revisited
The harvest season of '99 didn't parade the flamboyance of excessive heat nor indeed suffer in morose dampness. It was, by all accounts, reliable and steadfast — attributes mirrored in the cellar where winemaking forethought matched the rhythms of nature. As a result, the 1999 Grand Puy Lacoste offers investors a portrait of balance and structure; ripe tannins maintain their hold whilst integrating seamlessly with a vibrant acidity that promises longevity yet charms currently.
Current tastings reveal a wine at a splendid juncture of its arc, with tertiary characteristics augmenting rather than overshadowing primary fruit essences. The sure-footedness this wine possesses suggests it can hold its own against further ageing; however, it certainly doesn't discourage immediate enjoyment for those astute investors looking to uncork something special today.
This particular bottle speaks volumes about the subtlety and grace achievable in Bordeaux without the pomp. It stands as an attractively understated asset for those looking to diversify their collection with a wine that exudes quiet confidence. As such, the 1999 Grand Puy Lacoste is an endearing chapter within Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste’s storied legacy — one decidedly worth savouring or holding onto for continued maturation and appreciation.

Tasted in Bordeaux. What a fabulous Pauillac! It has stunning definition on the nose with scents of blackberry, fresh raspberry, a touch of iodine, cedar and graphite. The palate is beautifully balanced with perfect acidity: not a complex Pauillac wine but so effortless and graceful. It encapsulates everything great about 'classic' Bordeaux that is so damn drinkable that a bottle is finish all too soon. I may have underrated this little gem in the past. Wonderful! Tasted August 2011.

This deep ruby/purple-colored 1999 has some tannin to resolve, but it is an elegant, medium-bodied, delicious effort that will reward readers who have the patience to cellar it for several years. It is not a blockbuster in the style of the 2000 or 1996, but the 1999 offers charming roundness, sweet cassis fruit, excellent purity, and fine overall balance. It should last for 16+ years.
