By Domaine Leroy
2006 Vosne les Beaux Monts from Domaine Leroy, Burgundy
The sophisticated palate of the fine wine investor is perpetually in pursuit of exceptional vintages that transcend the ordinary. Within this noble quest, the 2006 Vosne les Beaux Monts from Domaine Leroy soars as an embodiment of Burgundian majesty.
Defining the Vintage: Distinctive Elegance
Domaine Leroy is revered for its unyielding adherence to biodynamic cultivation, a philosophy that finds exquisite expression in the 2006 vintage. This year presented challenges with irregular weather patterns leading to a growing season marked by a cool spring and a summer where heat and rain played a temperamental dance. These climatic caprices, however, have only heightened the allure of the 2006 Vosne les Beaux Monts, as the domain's meticulous care nurtured a wine that mirrors the intricacies of its creation.
The 2006 bottling articulates the distinctive terroir with finesse; a luminous garnet in the glass unveils an aromatic lexicon featuring ripe red cherries, delicate violets, and an undercurrent of earthy minerality. On the palate, one uncovers layers of complexity with finely tuned tannins embracing a core of spiced fruit confit finished with an enthralling truffle note. A whisper of oak lingers amidst this symphony, augmenting without overpowering.
The Investment Potential of A Refined Choice
For connoisseurs seeking investment-grade wines, Domaine Leroy's craft offers an unmissable opportunity. The nuanced sophistication and longevity potential of the 2006 Vosne les Beaux Monts make it a vintage worth safeguarding in one's collection. It stands as one of the more cerebral offerings from this acclaimed producer; a vintage that required patience and now rewards with bountiful poise.
Assuredly, inclusion of this gem within an investment portfolio denotes not only an appreciation for storied Burgundian tradition but also signifies confidence in wines that have triumphed over challenging conditions to yield a remarkable maturity that speaks volumes to those who listen closely.
In summary, while other vintages from Domaine Leroy garner much-deserved praise, the 2006 Vosne les Beaux Monts reveals itself as a remarkably captivating narrative in viticulture – its story owoven through every sip.

Smoked meat and dark berries on the nose of the Leroy 2006 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts lead into an expansively rich palate, on which fine-grained tannins are abundantly evident yet adeptly-integrated. The cherry-like fruit here is even sweeter, purer and has a slightly fresher edge than in the Brulees, but despite fascinating carnal and forest floor shadings, there is not quite the same mysterious complexity, at least for now. That the two wines closely resemble one another is perhaps not surprising, since Bize-Leroy explains that they represent one and the same parcel, divided between two lieux dits. The results achieved by Lalou Bize-Leroy in 2006 are all the more notable in view of the misgivings she expressed early on about this vintage. (And, as her reaction to 2004 demonstrates, she will not shy away from declassifying even her entire production if she feels that the wines are not up to their terroir pedigrees.) As voluptuously rich as are Bize-Leroy's 2006 reds, they preserve the sense of buoyancy and elegance common to so many of the standouts of this vintage, and one's gums will not come away fatigued by the strength of underlying tannin or the near-hyper-concentration displayed by her – to be sure awesome – 2005s. As every year, these wines represent meticulous vine manicure; miniscule yields ("above all regulated by severe pruning, not triage," Bize-Leroy emphasizes); and fidelity to biodynamic methods and metaphysics; and were bottled in the second December following the harvest. Despite their winsomeness, they have long life expectancies. Since, however, I have very little experience of their predecessors as they have matured, I have confined my prognostication to a few isolated and very general comments in the tasting notes that follow. Note that I have included as well under the heading "Leroy" the wines of Madame Bize-Leroy's Domaine d'Auvenay – its cellars located outside Saint-Romain – which now encompass two appellations in red, since inevitably when information is being sought about these wines, and even often when they are described, it is under the name "Leroy."
