Wine as NFT: Cult Wines Announces Partnership and First of its Kind NFT with Chateau Angélus

We are excited to announce an exclusive partnership with Chateau Angelus, the iconic Saint-Emillon Premier Grand Cru Classé A winery, to auction a one of one non-fungible token (NFT) to commemorate Bordeaux En Primuer 2020. The auction goes live on 13 July, 2021, on OpenSea.

The one of one digital artwork features a 3D animated depiction of the iconic Chateau Angélus bells, the emblem of the estate featured on wine labels, the logo and from which the winery takes its name.

Industry standard for reliably proving ownership and authentication, the NFT will give the buyer the right to ownership of one barrel of Chateau Angélus Bordeaux En Primeur 2020 – to be bottled in whichever format(s) they chose* – one-of-a-kind experiences at Chateau Angélus, and Cult Wines’ signature care, preservation, and storage of the wine until it’s ready to drink.

“At Cult Wines, we are on a mission to reinvent and grow the fine wine category, and innovation is central to that vision,” said Tom Gearing, CEO & Co-Founder of Cult Wines. “This collaboration enables us to engage a new generation of wine drinkers in a creative way, by providing access to experiences, wine producers, and one-of-a-kind opportunities that truly demonstrate the specialized knowledge, access, relationships and insights that are the cornerstones of our brand experience.”

Cult Wines has partnered with Chateau Angélus for many years. One of the most prestigious and respected Bordeaux producers, Chateau Angélus is also known for being one of the most innovative properties in Bordeaux. The forward-thinking winery has a legacy of implementing bold and progressive changes, so we knew they would be the perfect partner to collaborate on this initiative.

More on NFTs

What is an NFT?

In simplest terms, an NFT – a non-fungible token - is an entry on blockchain, a decentralised digital ledger. An NFT is generally a one-of-a-kind digital asset that can be bought and sold but has no tangible form of their own. NFTs can be thought of as certificates of ownership for virtual or physical assets.

I’ve never bought an NFT before, is it safe?

NFTs are volatile and there is an unpredictable nature of the new market. As with any investment, it’s important that investors are aware of the risks as much as the rewards.

What is the price for the Cult Wines x Chateau Angélus NFT?

The reserve price for the NFT is £75,000. The value of the NFT, Chateau Angélus wine, Bordeaux experiences and Cult Wine care and storage of the wine is priceless.

What can you tell me about the digital artwork?

The digital artwork commemorates the release of Bordeaux En Primeur, 2020, and was inspired by the iconic Chateau Angélus bells, the symbols of the estate featured on wine labels from which the winery takes its name. The intricate design showcases the famous Saint-Emilion bell tower in extraordinary 3D detail, down to the engravings around the circumference of the bell and the strike of the hammer that elicits the actual sound of the Chateau Angélus bells ringing.
