2002 Le Petit Cheval

By Chateau Cheval Blanc

2002 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux

In the ever-evolving narrative of Bordeaux vintages, the 2002 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc unfurls its tapestry with a quiet confidence. A year that challenged Bordeaux vignerons with capricious weather, 2002 nevertheless yielded moments of serendipity, particularly for those who responded deftly to the whims of nature.

Delicate Prowess in a Challenging Year

The 2002 vintage confounded early skeptics with a September reprieve that escorted in a crop embodying poised balance and graceful aging potential. In the glass, the Le Petit Cheval articulates this equilibrium exquisitely; its palate is an essay on subtlety: medium-bodied with finely-woven tannins that impart a silken texture which belies its firm structure.

Aromatic layers of dark cherry, underbrush and hints of truffle denote a wine that embraces the complexities bestowed by its Saint-Émilion terroir. The use of Cabernet Franc complements the Merlot's broad strokes with an olfactory high-wire act – delicate violets, and tobacco notes juxtaposed against a backdrop of earthy undertones.

A Vintage Defined by Elegance and Precision

Time has been kind to the 2002 Le Petit Cheval, bestowing upon it a nuanced maturity without diminishing its fruit core. Discerning collectors will note how this testimantial to Saint-Émilion's resilience has blossomed, now delivering an eloquence that is both profound and whisper-soft.

A narrative companion to tranquil contemplation or eloquent discourse, it embodies the understated finesse emblematic of Château Cheval Blanc's philosophy. So too does it present a compelling case for investment - its narrative weaving through the cellar as much as the market – displaying the sort of longevity and refinement that speaks directly to the sagacious investor's portfolio.

Concluding Sips

The journey of 2002 Le Petit Cheval from bud break to bottle speaks volumes about Château Cheval Blanc's mastery over their craft. Aligning oneself with such composed expression can enrich both palate and portfolio alike. With time's passage, this 2002 offering beckons one to unearth its continuing story: not only a tale told through the evolution of a singular vintage but also through the long term rewards it can unveil for those patient enough to invest in its unfolding chapters.

Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. This has a ripe, black cherry, liquorices tinged fruit on the nose that is slightly muffled, with sous-bois and cedar aromas developing. Could this be Figeac? Certainly some lovely Cabernet Franc showing on the masculine palate, foursquare, austere, a serious wine with tarry, cigar box, quite tannic finish. Assertive, but lacks a little charm. Tasted October 2009.
