2008 Chateau Valandraud

By Chateau Valandraud

2008 Chateau Valandraud from Chateau Valandraud, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

The 2008 vintage from Saint-Emilion's notable Chateau Valandraud heralds from a year that challenged Bordeaux's vintners with erratic weather. However, as history shows us, it is precisely under these testing conditions that diligent winemakers distinguish themselves by crafting wines with remarkable character and longevity.

A Harvest Against the Odds

The growing season began with initial trepidation due to cool, wet periods, only to submit to a merciful Indian summer which provided salvation in the form of optimal late ripening conditions. The resultant 2008 Chateau Valandraud encapsulates this dramatic turn of events in the glass, presenting investors with an opulent yet complex Bordeaux treasure.

The Pinnacle of Precision and Panache

One will observe that this particular vintage marries concentration with elegance. A vivid bouquet upon decanting betrays notes of ripe plum and blackberry, touched gently by hints of tobacco and graphite - a testament to the meticulous terroir management by the vintners. On the palate, this full-bodied red asserts tannic maturity that has mellowed beautifully over years in the bottle, rounded out with a finish extended and layered.

A wine such as the 2008 Chateau Valandraud suits poised connoisseurs looking to enhance their cellar collection with an investment-worthy vintage. For those educated in the nuances of Saint-Emilion's offerings and driven by a predilection for vintages crafted against the climatic tide, this vintage certainly presents itself as a choice contender.

As a longstanding critic covering the ebb and flow of Bordeaux's vinous outputs, I assert that this particular bottle is one not just for sipping but for savvy investing. In its unique blend of adversity-turned-excellence, the 2008 Chateau Valandraud stands as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its makers.

Indeed, fine wine enthusiasts contemplating a plunge into the storied realm of Bordeaux investment will find in 2008 Chateau Valandraud a tableau of proficiency and promise – a delightful paradox born from a year where hope was nurtured on a vineyard's edge.

Tasted blind at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the 2008 Valandraud is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc matured in new oak for 24 months. It put in a quite brilliant performance (here paired against the 2008 Trotanoy). It has a boisterous, bravura of a nose with outstanding vigor and clarity: red cherries and boysenberry fruit, graphite and traces of wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, beautiful pure black cherry and raspberry fruit with a faint touch of orange sorbet. Seamless in texture with a refined and silky smooth finish, this is drinking beautifully now but will clearly age for another two decades. This is outstanding for the vintage. Tasted December 2016.
