A Vintage That Speaks Volumes

While many estates grappled with the whims of the season, Chateau Leoville Las Cases harnessed the climatic intricacies with aplomb, crafting a wine of admirable structure and depth. The 2004 Leoville Las Cases reveals an intricate bouquet steeped in cassis and dark cherry notes, laced with nuanced hints of cedar and earthy undertones which hold dear to a savvy wine investor's palate.

Terroir's Triumph

The confluence of moderate weather and judicious vineyard management culminated in a harvest that bore fruit robust with tannins, yet soft enough to warrant early enjoyment; a characteristic that demarcates the 2004 vintage within the storied lineage of Leoville Las Cases.

On the palate, one finds a balance seldom achieved by its contemporaries. There is both intensity and restraint in this sabre dance of fruit against structure. Longevity is etched into its core—making it an asset worth considering for investments—as it continues to evolve beautifully in bottle.

Investing in a bottle or case of 2004 Leoville Las Cases signifies not simply acquiring an exceptional Bordeaux wine but rather securing a chapter of viniculture lore. This vintage—a beacon of sophistication—is brimming with potential both for future indulgence and investment reward.

In summary, the 2004 Leoville Las Cases from Chateau Leoville Las Cases proves itself as one of those serendipitous encounters between challenging weather and human mastery over winemaking. It remains a compelling addition to any serious collection, displaying a character defined not by the shadow of vintages past but by its standout narrative—one shaped by a climate-coaxed ingenuity that yields rich rewards for those patient enough to invest in its continued maturation.

Like Clos du Marquis, the nose is very backward and broody, though eventually aromas of blackberry leaf and citrus fruits emerge. Then becoming more minerally. Full-bodied, very tannic and robust with precocious ripe black fruits. Quite linear, very tight. Huge grip. It just lacks some joie-de-vivre, some brightness of fruit. As always, strangely unlovable, but undoubtedly impressive. Tasted April 2005.

Performing better from bottle than it did from cask, this blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 11% Cabernet Franc has put on weight over the last year. It exhibits the classic style of both Las Cases and St.-Julien in its deep black currant notes interwoven with sweet cherries, wet stones, and toasty vanillin. Made in a structured, medium to full-bodied style with superb concentration, beautiful purity, and admirable symmetry, this beauty is one of the strongest efforts of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. Also tasted: 2004 Clos du Marquis (88)
