The 2013 Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux from Domaine Emmanuel Rouget, Burgundy
As a critic who values the intimate marriage of terroir and time, it's particularly compelling to delve into the chromatic encyclopedia that is the 2013 vintage from the hallowed plots of Vosne Romanée. There's a lucid chapter in this anthology — the 2013 Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux from Domaine Emmanuel Rouget, a wine that echoes the narrative of its fraught season with eloquence.
Vintage Valor: An Odyssey of Resilience
The growing season of 2013 was mired in adversity; cold, wet conditions in Burgundy delayed flowering and invited an ongoing battle with nature’s tempests. Yet the wines that emerged — like those coaxed from the heralded terroir of Cros Parantoux by the adept hands at Domaine Emmanuel Rouget — speak loudly to the prowess such challenges can invoke in adroit winemaking.
Where some vintages radiate power, the 2013 delivers complexity through finesse. The pinot noir from this microscopic, exalted plot, previously tended by Henri Jayer, challenges oenophiles to unearth layers not defined by mere weight but by intricate textures and an intellectual depth.
Tracing Terroir: Wine Investment Woven With Elegance
Pouring the 2013 Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux illuminates the glass with vibrant hues, a prelude to a palate where energy and endurance are paramount. It scribes a testament, with whispers of dark berries and delicate floral notes amidst undertones of spice and earth. Tannins are fine-grained, an elegant skeletal structure around which complex flavours pirouette gracefully.
The endurance of this 2013 vintage is unmistakable. With modesty but certainty, it invites investment consideration as much for its narrative arc through a season of climactic hurdles as for its undoubted ageing potential over the coming decades.
Concluding Notes on a Narrow yet Nuanced Narrative
In summing up, the 2013 Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux from Domaine Emmanuel Rouget stands as one entrancing page in Burgundy's tapestry. Its tale is one of strife turned to strength; its voice — while less loud than boisterous vintages — impresses with subtlety and sophistication. It's this quietly confident character that makes a compelling case for collectors considering the long-term tale it promises to unfold within their cellars.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux was enduring an extremely long malolactic when I tasted it from barrel in December 2014. So yes, the nose is difficult to assess but the palate is very well defined and the mineralité already shines through. I like the primal energy here, the finish tense and full of frisson that bodes well for whenever it deigns us with its presence. Will it match the imperious 2012? Hmm...not quite sure about that, but it should be a worthy follow-up.
