By Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier

2017 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, Burgundy, France

As an appellation that commands reverence, Bonnes Mares rarely strays from its reputation for producing some of Burgundy's most compelling red wines. The 2017 vintage from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier is a testament to this illustrious lineage, encapsulating the essence of its terroir with remarkable fidelity.

A Vintage Speaks: The Narrative of 2017

The narrative of the 2017 vintage is one of triumph over climatic unpredictability. A year marked by early bud break and a subsequent frost scare that thankfully spared the Bonnes Mares vineyards, delivered a growing season that was both warm and dry. These conditions set the stage for a luscious yet poised expression of Pinot Noir. In this context, the 2017 Bonnes Mares emerges as a paragon of balance, weaving together Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier's signature finesse with the vintage's intrinsic vibrancy.

The wine itself presents a sensory tableau orchestrated by Mugnier's deft hands. A voluptuous bouquet spills forth dark fruits interlaced with whispers of earthy undertones and an almost imperceptible kiss of oak – a hallmark of meticulous élevage. On the palate, the wine's texture is seamless – tannins are ripe and velvety, caressing rather than commanding attention, allowing the fruit to speak with clarity and depth.

An Insightful Investment: The Promise of 2017 Bonnes Mares

For collectors and investors seeking to embellish their portfolio with a red Burgundy of distinction, the 2017 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier represents an insightful choice. Its poised character suggests a promising evolution, where maturity will unveil additional layers of complexity and elegance. As time is often the greatest ally to wines of such calibre, one can anticipate future tastings to reveal a tapestry woven with even greater intricacy.

Epitomising the harmonious union between vineyard and vigneron, the 2017 Bonnes Mares stands as one of Burgundy's shining examples from a vintage whose story will be recounted for years to come. It is not merely a wine; it’s an ongoing dialogue with time itself.

The 2017 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is also showing brilliantly from bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, wild berries and plums mingled with notions of peonies, grilled squab, spices and musk. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with good concentration and ripe acids, framed by an ample endowment of fine, powdery tannin that renders this more structured than the corresponding Amoureuses but not in any sense more austere. While this is quite charming and expressive for young Bonnes Mares, at least a decade's patience will be warranted.
