2019: A Vintage Defined by Balance and Elegance

2019 was a year that posed its set of climatic challenges to the winemakers of Burgundy, with warm temperatures demanding precise intervention to preserve the intrinsic delicacy of the Pinot Noir grapes. The deftness displayed by Ponsot in this arena is admirable, as their 2019 yield has been gauged with a precision that ensures optimal ripeness without foregoing the essential tension that imbues these venerable vines' wines with verve and longevity.

The Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru rises in sophistication with a sensorial profile that articulates eloquent notes of dark cherry, violet, and restrained spice, all underpinned by an elegant minerality that is hallmark to this storied plot. The wine pirouettes between power and finesse, demonstrating an astute barreling regime that integrates oak nuances without overwhelming the varietal's voice.

A certain opulence is etched into the 2019's texture, a layered silkiness that frames tannins which are both supple and precise. Such is the harmony in this wine's construction, it becomes emblematic of a vintage where nature's largesse has been channeled into bottles of poised potentiality.

Investing in Elegance: The Allure of Ponsot's Mastery

For those who seek more than mere liquid pleasure, but long to invest in enological artworks, the 2019 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Ponsot is a compelling candidate. The king of the cellar is predictably the 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, and equally predictably, it was the most reserved and introverted wine in the cellar when I visited. Wafting from the glass with aromas of peonies, plums, cherries, orange rind, warm spices and rich soil tones, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with huge concentration, an elegantly muscular chassis of rich, powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish.
