2006 Costa Russi

By Gaja

2006 Costa Russi from Gaja, Italy

The epitome of the elegance inherent in the fine wines from Italy, the 2006 Costa Russi from Gaja is a master blend of refinement and power. This vintage testifies beautifully to Gaja's ongoing triumph in transforming what was once considered a secondary grape into a protagonist worthy of its own virtuoso performance.

A Deep Dive into Barbaresco Terroir's Elegance

Engaging in a tête-à-tête with this wine evokes an immediate understanding of why savvy investors are appreciative towards the prices commanded by these superlative examples of Barbaresco. The '06 vintage goes beyond expectations, making an impressive mark in the langhe landscape.

The outstanding fact about 2006 Costa Russi is its structure. This wine is assembled differently from the opulent 2005 and 2007 editions - it conveys those classic Nebbiolo characteristics with a degree of restraint that seems designed to allow the subtleties to accumulate with age.

An Unexpected Year for Nebbiolo, Promising Huge Returns

The weather context of the 2006 vintage in Northern Italy necessitated expert handling, which Gaja mastered gracefully. The temperamental Nebbiolo responded favourably, producing complex, fragrant wines with profound tannic character. Here, the Costa Russi vineyard yielded an appealing medley of cherries, blackcurrants, truffles and hints of cedar that tantalises the palate.

Patience will reward those willing to cellar this Barbaresco for few more years; it still feels young but sure-footed in its evolution, steadily moving towards a fruitful maturity.

In essence, the 2006 Costa Russi extols what Gaja does the best - crafting single-vineyard expression of Nebbiolo that is both an honour to its roots and a nudge towards an exciting future. Its intelligence lies in its ability to balance the haunting charms of Nebbiolo with modern winemaking prowess. An investment not to be overlooked.

Scores and tasting notes

The 2006 Langhe Costa Russi is a bit reticent at first, and two of the three bottles I tasted showed elements of reduction that eventually blew off. A gorgeous center of soft perfumed fruit lies behind the slightly unfocused bouquet. The wine reveals notable clarity and detail once it opens up in the glass, with dark cherries, flowers and minerals that linger on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. Angelo Gaja's 2006s from Barbaresco are lovely, although they require a bit of aeration to find their focus. Tthe 2006 Barbaresco in particular is quite an achievement in this challenging vintage. As always Gaja blends in a small percentage of Barbera for his single-vineyard Langhe wines. Importer: Terlato Wines International, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604 8900
