2002 Ermitage l'Ermite from Chapoutier, Rhone

One of the true standout vintages of the new millennium, the 2002 Ermitage l'Ermite from Chapoutier appreciates the weight of a great Rhône pedigree. Embodying forty vintages of experience deeply ingrained in every bottle, it conveys a compelling tale of environmental nuances and skillful craftmanship.

Discovery of nuances, a journey within each sip

What marks out this iteration is a sublime marriage of terroir character with unmissable vintage distinctiveness. From the producer's perch at the heart of Rhône grows an eloquent testament to meticulous winemaking that implements organic and biodynamic practices before it became regalement by many.

The singularity of the 2002 Ermitage l'Ermite is persuading enough to lure even the most discerning wine investors. Its epitome is an austere yet elegant expression of Syrah— a varietal seeped in complex flavors and tantalizing depth.

Rain-kissed vintage, nuanced complexity

Compelled spotlight on its transfixing sensorial profile can't be spoken without due homage to the pivotal year that bore it. The 2002 season was predominantly rainy, challenging the abilities of top producers within Rhône. However, where others saw impediment Chapoutier saw opportunity.

This tricky vintage required tactful agility, producing a unique and somewhat paradoxical Syrah. The splendour and complexity offered by the 2002 Ermitage l’Ermite from Chapoutier yields definite allure for astute collectors and investors alike.

Savouring its evolving expressions is akin to swirls of fog unraveling before a luminous dawn. Its inherent austerity gives way to ripe plum and blackcurrant fruits, underpinned by accents of smoked herbs and leather. Complementing its intense, full-bodied structure is an applaudable tannic grip that accentuates the overall drinking experience.

Investment in the 2002 Ermitage l'Ermite is an investment in Chapoutier's commitment to quality, season variation, and the captivating dance between vine, vintage and viticulture. Masterfully balancing vitality and depth, it paints a profound picture of how adversity births consequent brilliance. An exceptional wine that triumphs regardless and for many, defines the very spirit of Rhône’s winemaking prowess.

As extraordinary as the 2003s are, I was also blown away by the 2002s produced by Chapoutier, some of which are among the top wines of this challenging vintage. As I have said so many times over the last 15 years, the top Chapoutier wines are meant for very long term drinking, and are not designed for immediate gratification. Everything Chapoutier is doing, from his bio-dynamically farmed vineyard to tiny yields, extended fermentations, indigenous yeasts, and no fining or filtration, is done to produce the essence of a vineyard and a vintage. His track record since 1989 and 1990 admirably proves that these are indeed remarkable wines made by a young genius who refuses to compromise. Michel Chapoutier has been misunderstood by some of his peers, and there is a lot of jealousy when someone this young is so incredibly talented, but it is an irrefutable fact that these are wines of singular greatness as well as longevity.
