The 2006 Napanook from Dominus, California, USA

Amid the pantheon of eminent Californian vintages, one that makes a compelling case for fine wine investment is the 2006 Napanook from Dominus. This particular expression humbly redefines the essence of Napa Valley’s Merlot-heavy Bordeaux blends.

A Snapshot into its Genetic Makeup

Created in the heart of Napa Valley, the 2006 Napanook weaves a complex tale of winemaking prowess, marrying Merlot's plump sweetness with the Cabernet Franc's ethereal elegance, and set against the stronghold structure of Cabernet Sauvignon. This poetic blend reflects the pedigree, expertise, and uncompromising pursuit of quality synonymous with Dominus.

Delving into the liquid narrative uncovers stunning layers: ripe cassis intertwined with vivid cherries and decorated with spicy tobacco notes and a veneer of subtle earthiness. On the palate, these elements dance around a core of refreshing acidity and robust tannins that leave a lasting imprint.

The 2006 Vintage – An Unusual Masterpiece

The 2006 harvest in California presented vignerons with unique challenges – an unpredictable climate marked by a hot July and rain-splattered September tested their resilience. However, adversity bore creativity. Producers such as Dominus seized this opportunity to craft a vintage that personifies resilience, soaking up these climatic eccentricities to birth a wine exuding depth and character.

This fine wine from USA showcases an intriguing marriage of power and finesse, capturing the essence of the region with profound clarity. Investment in the 2006 Napanook continues to reveal its sequenced sophistication and potential for significant increase in value.

Interplay of Terroir and Timing

From vine to glass, the 2006 Dominus Napanook is a testimony to the timeless allure of Napa Valley. This striking red weaves a complex narrative, its character and depth intertwined with the subtleties of its climatic timeline. A study in contrast, it is an investment proposition that offers a nuanced glimpse into Napanook's vaunted terroir while showcasing the transformative effect of California's unpredictable 2006 weather patterns.

For astute investors, Napanook's wine portfolio remains one of the most promising avenues for diversifying into fine wines, and the 2006 vintage signifies a case study in the winning combination of terroir interpretation and climatic adaptation.

The 2006 Napanook (a 3,500-case blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot) is made in a riper, more California style than usual, displaying more exuberant, up-front notes of kirsch, black currants, and plums. Deep and full-bodied with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a fleshy, succulent personality, it tastes like a classic Napa Cabernet. Consume it over the next 10-15 years. Christian Moueix, Dominus’ owner, has purchased the 35-acre Swanson Vineyard, which is situated between the well-known California bistros, Brix and Mustard’s. I suspect that will result in a third label from Dominus. At present, the production from these large holdings in Yountville is approximately 10,000-12,000 cases, with the second wine, Napanook, representing 3,500-4,000 cases, depending on the vintage. It is ironic that Christian Moueix, the great Merlot specialist at his flagship chateaux in Pomerol, especially Petrus, prefers the other Bordeaux varietals at his Napa property. Interestingly, when I visit Dominus, they always open a fresh bottle and serve it alongside a bottle that has been decanted for 24 hours. On each occasion, the more complex, open wine is the one that has had 24 hours of aeration, something buyers of this wine should take into consideration. These are the two strongest back to back vintages for Dominus since 1990-1991 and 2001-2002. Tel. (707) 944-8954; Fax (707) 944-0547
