2014 Chateau Rauzan-Segla from Chateau Rauzan-Segla, Margaux, Bordeaux

The formidable 2014 vintage from Chateau Rauzan-Segla exudes the unique expression of Margaux's terroir with exceptional grace. Renowned for its elegance and finesse, this particular iteration reflects a challenging but ultimately rewarding year in Bordeaux. I have closely observed and tasted its development since its release, gauging how it evolves and presents itself with the luxury of time.

The Vintage’s Vibrant Verve

Imbued with Margaux's quintessential charm, the 2014 Chateau Rauzan-Segla captures the very soul of its birth year—a vintage that defied expectations after a testy beginning and culminated in a rather miraculous September respite. The eager anticipation of fine wine investors was quelled and quenched as the quality of the harvest became apparent. It is a testament to the adept hands at Chateau Rauzan-Segla that they finessed such an arresting wine amidst meteorological mischief.

A Sensorial Chronicle of 2014

My recent tasting unfolds a layered bouquet rife with black fruits, violets and subtle hints of cedar—an aroma that is both inviting and complex. On the palate, the 2014 offering is tenaciously structured with ripe tannins promising excellent longevity. Beyond the initial dark cherry and cassis lies an earthy truffle underpinning, bespeaking both the pedigree of its domaine and the specificities of this season's terroir.

This vintage unfolds on the palate with both generosity and precision; to sip it is to traverse a landscape punctuated by well-integrated oak nuances alongside a velvety finish that lingers evocatively—an opulent yet measured narrative that will continue to unfurl over time.

An Epitome of Excellency

In sum, the 2014 Chateau Rauzan-Segla stages an enthralling act; one that plays out with poise in a finely-jewelled theatre of glass. It is not merely a testament to survival but an embodiment of triumph within an uncertain climatic canvas. Poised for further evolution, this splendid wine extends an invitation to investors seeking both sensory delight and promising cellarage potential—a Margaux offering replete with intrigue and ages beautifully.

The deep garnet colored 2014 Rauzan-Ségla reveals an open-knit, expressive nose of potpourri, unsmoked cigars, spice box and red loam with a core of plum preserves, blackcurrant jelly and bay leaves plus a touch of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied with compelling earthy layers and a real savoriness in the mouth, it has firm, chunky tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a lingering mineral note. The blend this year is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, harvested between September 22nd and October 16th, at an average yield of 37 hectoliters per hectare. It was aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new. The alcohol is 13.5%, and the pH is 3.59.
