Antonio Galloni crowns Right Bank as Bordeaux 2017 favourite

By

Antonio Galloni has released his 2017 vintage report, indicating – unlike many of his peers – a preference for the wines of the Right Bank.

In his report, published on Vinous, he writes that the vintage is in his opinion, “very clearly a Right Bank vintage”, adding that “a number of 2017s … are positively thrilling”.

Seven of his ‘most exciting’ Bordeaux 2017 wines come from the Right Bank: Ausone, Canon, Chateau Lafleur, L’If, Petrus, Chateau Troplong Mondot and Vieux Chateau Certan. He also agreed with Neal Martin that Lafite is “probably” the best First Growth of the vintage.

However, he had many good things to say about the Left Bank’s offerings, too. His favourites include Chateau Montrose, Haut Brion and Leoville Las Cases, “all of which are more sensual than they usually are at this stage.”

He also noted – as have Martin and Lisa Perrotti-Brown – that white wines have done well this year: “2017 is a fabulous vintage for Bordeaux’s dry whites and almost as good for sweet wines.”
