By Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste

2002 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, Pauillac, Bordeaux

In the firmament of Bordeaux vintages, those who seek finesse over flamboyance often laud the 2002 Grand Puy Lacoste from Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste. This vintage is one that perhaps does not clamour for attention with immediate bombastics but seduces with subtlety and depth—a true testament to the alchemy of winemaking at play in a more challenging climatic year.

A Vintage of Composure and Complexity

The narrative of 2002 in Pauillac speaks of a season of contrasts, where early anticipation gave way to nail-biting patience required to outlast September rains. Yet, it is precisely these conditions that have sculpted the 2002 Grand Puy Lacoste into an expression of Pauillac terroir with unexpected poise. Already having two decades to evolve, it displays a balletic balance between assertive tannins and dark fruit decadence that investors will recognise as both prime for enjoyment and patient cellaring.

An Oenophile’s Investment Delight

Lovers of claret with an investor's acumen will find merit beyond the 2002 Grand Puy Lacoste's elegant repose; there lies a structure endowed with longevity and a slow-burn development that bodes incredibly well for both palate pleasure and portfolio performance. Insightful investment in such vintages oftentimes yields unexpected dividends, both tactile and financial. This is a wine that continues to gently rise in matured stature as well as market value, navigating the temporal stream with an aristocratic grace.

Connoisseur’s Summary

Substantial yet nuanced, this wine purrs with an understated confidence—beckoning those who appreciate the gentle command of aged claret.

Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. A classic Pauillac bouquet with notes of blackberry, sous-bois and pencil box. Great lift and expression and with time there are some subtle tobacco accents following through. The palate is tannic, masculine, well balanced but austere, with racy acidity and a finish that would not be seen dead without a cravat. Excellent. Tasted October 2009.

A light wine by the standards of this property, this herbaceous, spicy, red currant and plum-scented wine shows weedy notes of green tea intermixed with cherries and some washed-out red currants. It is a pleasant, picnic-styled Grand-Puy-Lacoste to drink during its first 5-7 years of life.
