By Chateau Mouton Rothschild
2002 Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux
The 2002 vintage in Bordeaux was one filled with tension and expectation, a challenging year that required the astute precision and expertise of meticulous vintners. In such demanding conditions, the 2002 Le Petit Mouton from Château Mouton Rothschild emerged with a dignified grace, reflective of its esteemed lineage.
An Exercise in Elegance and Complexity
Le Petit Mouton, Château Mouton Rothschild's second label, does more than simply share a name with its legendary forebearer—it inherits a portion of the family's knack for sublime expression. The 2002 vintage is a spread of complex aromas, weaving together threads of ripe blackcurrants, subtle oak, and earthy undertones—all hallmarks of a Pauillac with breeding. On the palate, it advances with medium-body finesse as one would expect from this slightly cooler year. The tannins are mature, silky even, suggesting that this wine is at an ideal phase for both drinking and investment purposes.
Harvesting Investment Potential
To the savvy wine investor, the 2002 Le Petit Mouton presents itself as an understated asset. Its evolution since release has traced a trajectory not unlike Bordeaux's own undulating landscape—a testament to its capacity for quiet persistence that speaks volumes about its future on the secondary market. Despite the vintage's initial reticence, this gem from Château Mouton Rothschild has emerged with poise and potential.
In concert with the finely textured palate layers are succulent notes of dark cherry and tobacco leaf—an homage to both terroir and craftsmanship reminiscent of this Bordeaux’s noble heritage. The exquisite balance between vibrant fruit core and resolved structural elements indicates that the wine rests comfortably in its plateau of maturity—offering both immediate pleasure and possibilities for further cellar adornment.
In summation, this vintage's narrative is one of triumph over adversity, highlighting both the resilience innate to the region and the learned adeptness of Château Mouton Rothschild's winemaking team. As the 2002 Le Petit Mouton graces palates now or nestles into wine portfolios, its story will assuredly continue to unfold in complex layers—much like its own evolving bouquet.

Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. An unexpected surprise. A fragrant, light, wild strawberry, raspberry and rose petal nose wafts from the glass all with admirable definition. The medium-bodied palate displays a sweet entry, rounded and fleshy red fruits with agreeable poise and an elegant, spicy finish. I was not the only one surprised that this was Le Petit Mouton, especially considering how coarse it tasted out of barrel! Very fine. Tasted October 2009.

An excellent second wine, the 2005 Le Petit Mouton exhibits soft, lush, subtle herb-infused black currant fruit along with notions of licorice, smoke, and burning embers. Enjoy this well-made effort over the next 7-8 years.
