2006 Ducru Beaucaillou from Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, St-Julien, Bordeaux

The 2006 vintage from the prestigious St-Julien appellation heralds a particularly notable year for Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou. This chateau, nestled in the heart of Bordeaux's left bank, has once again demonstrated its prowess in creating wines that captivate the senses and promise excellent long-term investment potential.

Eloquence of the 2006 Vintage

Critical to the success of the 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou was the year's climatic symmetry, characterised by a warm summer and timely, moderating conditions before harvest. The equilibrium of this season is encapsulated in every bottle, offering collectors a wine that exhibits remarkable structure and poise.

In comparison to its predecessors and successors, the 2006 vintage resonates with an almost alchemical blending of nature's offerings and human artistry. Right from its deep garnet hue to the last sip, this wine enthrals with a medley of subtle dark fruits, refined tannins, and a lingering finish that speaks volumes of its grace.

A Symphony of Complexity and Balance

The gravitas of terroir shines through in the aromatic profile of cassis and smoky cedar. A splendid fusion of Cabernet Sauvignon's assertive character with Merlot's softer nuances yields a wine that is layered yet accessible – fit for immediate indulgence or for tucking away in one's cellar.

The palate reveals a plush tapestry woven from ripe blackberry essence nuanced by hints of tobacco and earth – an epitome of St-Julien finesse. Expert vinification has lent this 2006 vintage a harmonious balance that beckons further maturation; though already stirring in its current state, its promise stretches like vines towards an opulent future.

An Unforgettable Expression

For those seeking a fine wine investment poised for appreciation, the 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou stands out as a prudent selection. Where time melds intricacies into elegance, this offering from Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou captures the very essence of an exceptional Bordeaux vintage — one that will resonate within the cellars and palates of connoisseurs for years to come.

Subtle aromas of currants, blueberries and minerals. Full body with super-integrated tannins and a fine, fine finish. I love the texture to this wine, and it's just starting to show you the true quality it has. Start drinking. One of the top wines of this vintage. Better in 2016.

Deep garnet in color, the 2006 Ducru-Beaucaillou delivers expressive Black Forest cake, blackcurrant cordial and chocolate box scents with touches of fertile loam, espresso, Marmite toast and black olives. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly played with vibrant fruit expression and a firm, grainy texture, finishing with a lively lift.

In a mini-vertical poured by Bruno Borie ('76, '86, '96 and '06) it is the youngest that I found to be the best wine. It simply has a heightened level of precision and clarity on the nose, that sense of crushed stone behind those layers of pure blackcurrant, cedar and graphite (almost like a Pauillac!) The palate is medium-bodied with great precision, a tensile Ducru Beaucaillou that shimmers all the way to the finish. This is a superb Ducru! Tasted November 2011.

This classic, backward, tannic St.-Julien is made in the style of the 1996 and 1986. The 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou possesses a dense purple color along with a sweet perfume of graphite, black raspberries, cassis, licorice, and subtle toasty oak. Despite their prominent place in the wine's structure, the sweetness of the tannins and the full-bodied, muscular style suggest exceptional patience will be required. This is a big, substantial, meaty, masculine wine built for considerable longevity. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035.
