The Patrician Palate of a Praiseworthy Vintage
As with every vintage appraisal, it is imperative to focus on the individual quirks that make it stand out. The 2002 vintage in Bonnes Mares was such that allowed for an extended hang time for the grapes, culminating in optimal ripeness tinged by the ministrations of Mother Nature's nuanced climatic patterns. The result is a bouquet that layers deeply aromatic cherries and ripe strawberries beneath a veil of earthiness typical of the best Bonnes Mares offerings.
The structure and complexity of this 2002 offering from Domaine Georges Roumier are unmistakable, with a palate that balances muscular tannins with a bright acidity—an interplay only achieved through masterful viticulture and vinification.

Scores and tasting notes
I have not tasted the 2002 Bonnes-Mares for several years. This bottle has an exquisite, delineated bouquet that suggests those precocious dark berry fruits have mellowed and given way to scents of Indian ink and a splash of balsamic. The palate is marked by a fleshy sweet entry and forward, slightly aggressive tannins that coalesce with aeration in the glass. There is a touch of hardness toward the finish, indicating that it might benefit from another two or three years in bottle. This is a stubborn Bonnes-Mares that has yet to really settle into its groove, although that may come in time. Tasted November 2013.
