2008 Bonnes Mares
By Domaine Georges Roumier
2008 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier, Burgundy, France
Transcending its appellation peers, the 2008 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier is a testament to the vintage's resilience and Roumier's peerless viticultural discipline. Notwithstanding the region's climatic vicissitudes, this red Burgundy has matured into an exemplar of harmony and sophistication.
An Illustrious Vintage Against All Odds
Bearing the brunt of a testing growing season, marked by a cool summer and late ripening, the 2008 vintage confounded expectations with a resounding presence that whispered of miracles. Producers holding fast to patience and precision crafted wines that defied vintage adversity — and the 2008 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier stands among those triumphs. As investors well know, such vintages often harbour bottles of exceptional ageing potential and unexpected delight.
A Distinctive Terroir Expression
The terroir's unique influence resonates throughout this sterling vintage. The wine's aromatic portrayal of fresh violets and earthy truffles encapsulates the mineral-rich clay and limestone soils of Bonnes-Mares. Its poised palate reveals layers: tart cherry, raspberry, and touches of clove evolve into an elegant dance on the tongue followed by a silky finish. The interplay of structure and finesse is emblematic of Roumier's unerring touch in such mercurial conditions.
An Investment Worthy Vintage
For the collector and investor alike, securing allocations of this exquisite vintage is undoubtedly strategic. As time favours the 2008 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier with increasing complexity and nuance, its value in both sensory and fiscal realms anticipates a promising ascension.
In closing, one can scarcely articulate the intricate splendour woven by this Burgundy maestro without indulging in the liquid poetry itself. My convictions incline towards its maturation being one for the annals; an investment in the 2008 Bonnes Mares is one in a chapter of enological opulence that continues to unfold with each patient year.

The 2008 Bonnes Mares is a huge, intense wine endowed with tons of fruit, but wrapped around a powerful, focused frame. The tannins are big, but also beautifully integrated. This towering Burgundy will require an extraordinary amount of patience before revealing its true pedigree, but it is clearly magnificent. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048. My visit with Christophe Roumier was one of the highlights of the two weeks I spent in Burgundy earlier in the year. The range of 2009s is simply extraordinary, and the 2008s aren’t too far behind. Most of the 2009s were in tank, awaiting imminent bottling. Roumier began harvesting on September 12. Importer: Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, Napa CA; tel. (707) 299-2600
