2010 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France

The vintage of 2010 in Burgundy stands as a testament to the resilience and finesse that the region's vignerons can coax from the vines in challenging climatic conditions. Amidst the vicissitudes of a growing season which juxtaposed fervent heat with intermittent cool spells, the 2010 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier has emerged triumphantly, offering investors a wine of remarkable complexity and depth.

The Elegance of Tenacity: A Vinous Paragon

The wines from Domaine Georges Roumier have been perennial beacons of Burgundian excellence, and the 2010 Bonnes Mares upholds this standard with an aristocratic grace. This vintage resulted in lower yields across Burgundy, but what was lost in quantity has been splendidly compensated for in quality, with the wine manifesting a captivating concentration punctuated by a vigorous structure that augurs well for its longevity.

An Exquisite Tapestry: Nuance and Boldness

The 2010 season produced fruit that was not only rich but impeccably balanced. The Bonnes Mares reflects this perfumed equilibrium with a heady bouquet redolent of ripe cherries, dark berries and an intriguing earthiness touched by anise and exotic spice. On the palate, this wine reveals layers upon layers: silky yet substantial tannins; a refined acidity that lifts the dense fruit core; and a lingering finish that brings forward a symphony of woodlands and minerality.

For those looking towards wine investment, the 2010 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Georges Roumier presents a formidable choice. Its current stage shows promise of unfolding beautifully over time, ensuring its place as one of the vintage's most noteworthy collectables.

The 2010 Bonnes-Mares is explosive and totally exciting. A big, broad- shouldered frame supports a core of black fruit, mint, flowers and licorice in this powerful, massively structured wine. Here, too, it is the wine’s energy and focus that truly stand out most. The finish turns weightless and totally sublime. As usual, I tasted the Bonnes-Mares from its two main components, and then in the blend, and it was the blend that was most convincing of the three wines. The 2010 Bonnes-Mares is a wine built for a long rest in the cellar before it begins to approach the early part of what promises to be a long drinking window. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2050. The only real problem with Christophe Roumier’s 2010s is the production, which was severely compromised by the December 2009 frost and the poor weather of 2010, especially during the flowering. On a more positive note, the wines are marked by their total transparency. Some of the entry-level wines are a bit on the light side, but the best 1er Crus and the Grand Crus are magical. Roumier started picking on September 28. Some of the wines were lightly chaptalized. I will report on the 2009s in our April issue. Importer: Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, Napa CA; tel.
