2014 Clos de Vougeot from Domaine Leroy, Burgundy, France

The esteemed 2014 vintage of Clos de Vougeot from Domaine Leroy beams with a radiance that hails from one of Burgundy's most storied vineyards. My tenure as a wine critic allows me to recall the precise climatic ballet that year, which bestowed upon us a growing season both challenging and rewarding, with an outcome nothing short of spectacular for those who showed patience.

A Vintage Defined by Patience and Precision

It is no simple task to pinpoint the zenith of excellence in Lalou Bize-Leroy's repertoire; however, the 2014 release illustrates the conjunction of an exceptional terroir with a year graced by nature's ultimate test of winemaker mettle. Despite a hesitant start to the summer, the late season's grace delivered fruit that when nurtured by Domaine Leroy's biodynamic approach, ripened into berries teeming with complex potential.

This particular 2014 Clos de Vougeot articulates the narrative of its vintage confidently. Notes of black cherry and ripe red fruits marry harmoniously with undercurrents of spice and earthy truffle - a symphony performed on the palatial stage that only authentic Clos de Vougeot terroir can provide. The tannins, astutely integrated and silky, foretell of a longevity that presumes to enchant for decades.

An Inarguable Candidate for Wise Investment

The essential distinction that 2014 conferred upon this wine can be felt in its equilibrium between strength and elegance; a duality that becomes more pronounced as it ages. In investing parlance, this prominent vintage symbolises a sound proposition for enthusiasts seeking expansion in both palate and portfolio.

Discerning collectors understand that certain years imprint their unique signature on a wine; the 2014 Clos de Vougeot from Domaine Leroy encapsulates such a phenomenon. A vintage poised to appreciate as gracefully as it presents in the glass today - robust yet supple, nuanced yet resounding - truly embodying the resilience and beauty of Burgundy's Clos de Vougeot.

The 2014 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru had the unenviable task of following the spellbinding Richebourg and I feel that it does not quite deliver the same degree of complexity and profundity. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, just a touch of meatiness on the more savory finish that is long and tender. Fine, if not quite at the level of Lalou's other grand crus this year.
