2009 Musigny Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy, Burgundy, France

The vintage that is the 2009 Musigny Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy offers an intricate tableau upon which Burgundy’s climatic gracefulness and the winemaker's adroit craftsmanship are evocatively juxtaposed. Bridging a span of four decades, my endeavours across the sprawling vineyards of the globe have often led me back to the storied hills of Burgundy, with Musigny Grand Cru standing as a paragon of viticultural reverence.

A Storied Vintage: The Backbone of Collections

The enigma of the 2009 vintage in Burgundy lies in its harmonious symphony of richness and structure—an interplay brought to life by an especially clement growing season. A comparatively warm summer fostered optimal ripeness, infusing into this vintage a voluptuousness that cast the muscular tannins in an unexpectedly supple light. This counterpoint enhances not only its immediate appeal but also signals a longevity that sophisticated wine investors will find utterly compelling.

Restraint Meets Exuberance: An Exceptional 2009

While the general traits of Domaine Leroy's Musigny concentrate on the meticulous cultivation and low yields that beget concentration and depth, it is the 2009 vintage’s unique character that mesmerises with every sip. In this rendition, one discerns crushed rose petals and liquefied cherry notes, underpinned by an earthy complexity quintessential to its terroir. It is on the palate that the wine truly triumphs; a masterstroke balance between bright acidity and resolute tannins, paving the way for its seamless aging potential.

When peering through the prism of wine investment terms, such as 'aging potential' and 'portfolio diversification', none could discount the auspicious nature of including a monumental wine like the 2009 Musigny Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy in one's collection. Its pedigree and poise ensure that this vintage is not merely held but cherished, with each passing year auguring increased intrigue and value.

Leroy’s Legacy Ensured

In summary, the 2009 Musigny Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy is a testament to the vintner’s finesse during a year hailed for its generosity. It stands out as an incandescent example within the portfolio, ripe for wise collectors to consider both for pleasure and prosperity. Holding fast to its future promise, this wine represents a confluence where artistry meets investment acumen—a rendezvous for cognoscenti to embrace with ardour.

The 2009 Musigny is graced with superb purity in its sublime fruit, articulate bouquet and stunning overall balance. In this lineup it comes across as having just a touch less stuffing and overall structure, but it nevertheless is totally captivating. This is all silk and cashmere. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. This was my first opportunity to taste the 2009s from Domaine Leroy in bottle. Lalou Bize-Leroy was among the first, if not the first, to bottle her 2009s, so she naturally wanted to give the wines some time to recover before showing them. The wines are stunning. Readers who have an opportunity to taste them should not hesitate. As always, the style is one of textural richness and depth, but the2009s appear to have excellent underlying material as well. The attention to every detail at the Domaine is quite evident in these thrilling wines. My visit ended with a sample of the 2010 Chambertin from barrel. Why not go straight to the top? If that wine is representative of the year, Leroy fans will have another superb vintage to look forward to, although yields will be lower than the already minuscule production.
