The 2018 Chateuneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes from Domaine de la Janasse, Rhone
The Chateuneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes from Domaine de la Janasse unequivocally showcases the character of the Rhone region. However, it is the 2018 vintage that truly laser-etches its place in our memories with distinctive attributes so unmistakably expressive of that year's growing conditions.
A Stalwart of Stability Amid Climatic Cacophony
The climatic vagaries of 2018 presented oenological challenges that were navigated deftly by the experienced team at Domaine de la Janasse. Despite a severe hailstorm that curtailed yields across part of the Rhone region, Janasse triumphed over adversity with their careful vine husbandry and due diligence, the results of which are manifested in every drop of this exemplary Chateuneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes.
The 2018 vintage retains its classic structure yet it has an uncommon vibrancy and fleshiness underpinned by a surprising freshness; a facet ascribed to the tempering effect of cooler nights that year. This is precisely why discerning investors continually earmark Rhone vintages - these wines not only stand up to time's onslaught but richly reward patience with their graceful maturation progressions.
Investment Perspective to 2018 Chateuneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes
From a fine wine investment perspective, the 2018 Chateuneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes offers considerable appreciation potential. It is a paradigm of equilibrium - robust enough for further cellaring yet approachable enough to deliver immediate pleasure, a fact that insulates it from market volatilities while bolstering its long-term return prospects. Such investment attributes are interwoven into the DNA of Domaine de la Janasse, an estate revered for consistent quality, and is encapsulated strikingly in this 2018 exemplar.
Detailed olfactory inspection of this enchanted potion reveals a synthesis of black fruit compote, wild herbs and a hint of liquorice, intercut by the firm but modulated tannin structure that affords the wine its longevity. However, it’s the final lingering note - a haunting echo of the terroir that tells a timeless tale of that hillside dust, sun, rain and wind arrayed in perfect order, which distinguishes it within the labyrinthine world of fine wines.
Investors and gourmands alike can rest assured that these sensory signatures have been inscribed indelibly into this noble bottle, standing as a testament to 2018’s climatic rollercoaster ride and Domaine de la Janasse's viticultural dedication, one that will generously repay those willing to invest time as much as finance into this illustrious liquid asset.

The magnificent 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes continues the string of successes under this label. While a bit less expressive on the nose than the other cuvées, it's impossibly voluminous on the palate. Full-bodied and expansive in the mouth, it's also rich and velvety, with ample tannic structure to support its almost overwhelming generosity. A whirl of mixed raspberries and blackberries join with salted licorice and dark chocolate, culminating in a long finish that combines more-ish salinity with the dusty essence of crushed stone.
