2008 Chateau Brane-Cantenac from Chateau Brane-Cantenac, Margaux, Bordeaux

The esteemed 2008 vintage from Chateau Brane-Cantenac in Margaux is a testament to the resilience of fine Bordeaux, even in a year that posed climatic challenges. This particular harvest required the astuteness of seasoned vintners, empowered by generations of winemaking wisdom inherent at Chateau Brane-Cantenac. I recall the season's irregular weather patterns, which proved demanding yet also beneficial—clearing just in time for harvest, preserving the essential virtues of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that define this storied blend.

Radiant Resilience in a Glass

Refinement rather than sheer power characterises the 2008 vintage from Chateau Brane-Cantenac, indicating meticulous crafting in both vineyard and vat room. This vintage exhibits a complex bouquet of dark fruits and floral hints, particularly violets, indicative of Margaux’s distinguished terroir. The palates of savvy investors and connoisseurs alike will appreciate the softened tannins—a gentle reminder of ageing's kind hand—that render an approachable yet intricate sip.

An Investment Worthy of Its Pedigree

While 2008 may have been overshadowed by other illustrious years, the beauty lies in its unexpected elegance; a diamond-in-the-rough quality that shrewd collectors recognise. The 2008 Chateau Brane-Cantenac finds itself at a fascinating stage: mature enough to reveal its intricate layers yet vigorous enough to age further. This balance makes it a captivating asset for investment portfolios, particularly for those looking to acquire Bordeaux that stands just outside the limelight of more renowned years.

In summary, the 2008 Chateau Brane-Cantenac encapsulates the fortitude and sophistication of Bordeaux's Margaux region. It stands as a staunch expression of winemaking adroitness, inviting a discerning appreciation—whether as an addition to one's cellar or an investment poised gracefully for future gratification.

Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château, the 2008 Brane-Cantenac is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The nose is quite striking with a tang of eucalyptus, a trait that Henri Lurton himself picked up when we tasted together. The palate is medium-bodied with a peppermint-tinged entry, the tannins quite thick and perhaps lacking the precision that Henri imparts into his Margaux wine nowadays. There is something not quite true to the style of Brane-Cantenac here, mimicking something it is not, trying to be a different person. It is an enjoyable wine but I would broach this in its youth. Tasted April 2015.
