2008 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux from Chateau Margaux, Margaux, Bordeaux

The 2008 vintage within Bordeaux was one that defied initial expectations, particularly for the Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux from Chateau Margaux. Though it emerged from an initially challenging season, marked by capricious weather and demanding vineyard management, the graceful evolution of this wine stands as testimony to the meticulous craftsmanship of the vignerons at this storied estate.

Finesse and Structure: A Harmonious Dialogue

One might argue that adversity is a vital ingredient in the alchemy that transforms a good wine into a great one. For devotees of Bordeaux, the 2008 Pavillon Rouge exemplifies this tenet. It presents itself with an attractive finesse, balancing a firm tannic structure with the classic elegance synonymous with the Margaux appellation.

A precision in winemaking is evident when sipping this fine claret. An alluring array of blackcurrant and cedar notes entwines with subtle hints of violet and a touch of spice derived from adept oak treatment. The moderate temperatures throughout August and September that year allowed for measured ripening; this is expressed in the assured poise between ripe fruit and refreshing acidity.

An Investment in Terroir-Driven Excellence

The 2008 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux reveals its narrative through each tasting — a narrative deeply rooted in the venerable soils of Bordeaux. The wine's harmony is a reflection of both its prestigious lineage and the character-building vintage conditions.

Connoisseurs should take note: this vintage offers a remarkable opportunity for investment. It is an expression from Chateau Margaux that manifests the resilient spirit of its terroir while displaying early maturity, indicative of its potential for further graceful ageing when cellared under optimal conditions.

In summary, cultivating an interest in vinous treasures like the 2008 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux is both a pleasure and a perspicacious move for collectors. As it unfurls in the glass, it promises to charm now and reward patience as time amplifies its intrinsic virtues — a jewel amongst its peers, radiant with promise and prestige.

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. The Pavillon Rouge appears to be on an upward trajectory in bottle. Here it has a very delicate, well-defined bouquet with black cherries, mulberry, minerals and blueberry. This is so delicate and pretty. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, tensile and poised, tightly coiled towards the finish but a lot of energy in this Margaux. This evinces succinct winemaking allowing the terroir to shine through. Tasted January 2012.

Delicate and refined with aromas and flavors of berries, cedar, and tobacco. Medium to full bodied, fine tannins and fruity, chocolaty finish. Second wine of Margaux. Try it in two years.

The 2008 Pavillon Rouge didn’t show quite as well as I had hoped, but is still an elegant, berry-scented, spicy, soft Pavillon Rouge with good depth, sweet tannins, and an attractive finish. It can be drunk now or cellared or 12-15 years.
