1998 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Wine enthusiasts and investors alike often seek out the exceptional, and the 1998 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild indeed presents an intriguing specimen from the mosaic of Bordeaux vintages. A testament to the enduring legacy of the estate, this vintage captures a piece of winemaking history that deftly combines an elegant structure with mature complexity.

Vintage Virtuosity: The Allure of Age

The year 1998 was marked by a climatic roller coaster in Bordeaux, with a challenging growing season that culminated in a harvest of lowered yields but high-quality fruit. The 1998 Carruades de Lafite flourishes as a wine with resilience, revealing how skilful vineyard management and astute winemaking can surmount the whims of nature. It was a vintage that favoured the Pauillac appellation, and this wine is a consummate ambassador.

Investment Merit: The Second Wine Sophistication

As a second wine from Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Carruades de Lafite offers a more immediate charm than its grand vin counterpart, yet with a promise of longevity that entices collectors and investors. The depth it has cultivated over the years is palpable; there's a dignified transition from vibrant youth to nuanced adulthood where tertiary notes of tobacco and forest floor have become more pronounced against the still-present cassis and cedar.

The palate concurs with this evolution—though the tannins have softened, they still carry the quintessential Pauillac strength, ensuring that the 1998 Carruades de Lafite maintains excellent structure. Its balance and graceful aging trajectory make it an appealing addition to any investor’s portfolio, particularly as mature Bordeaux vintages continue to appreciate both in sensory appeal and market value.

Conclusion: A Vintage Investment Worthy of Consideration

In summary, the 1998 Carruades de Lafite embodies the durability and panache one anticipates from Chateau Lafite Rothschild. It is not merely drinking well but is also situated at a fascinating intersection for investors—where past performance meets future potential. As such, it represents a shrewd investment for those seeking to diversify their collection with a vintage that has shown its mettle through time.

This has become one of the finest second wines produced. The 1998 (a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot) is an outstanding effort. While very Lafite-like (although more supple and forward), it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to an excellent bouquet of black fruits, smoke, earth, and minerals, supple tannin, an excellent texture, and a long, fine finish. Anticipated maturity: now-2015.

Another brilliant second wine, the 2010 Carruades de Lafite (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42.5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot) is elegant and amazing for a second wine from Lafite. 'Carruades de Lafite' is now engraved in the bottle to prevent unscrupulous sommeliers and merchants from trying to pass it off as Lafite Rothschild. The wine displays much of the same lead pencil, charcoal and black currant notes of its bigger sister, although it is forward, precocious and far less structured than the grand vin. Nevertheless, this wine, which can be drunk now, will cellar beautifully for at least 20-25 more years.

Ruby core. Pink rim. Nose is dominated by New Oak. Some raspberry notes. Palate is a little astringent with light acidity. Supple red fruits. Classy Second wine but not in the same league as Les Forts de Latour of Clos du Maquis. Tasted February 2000.
