2004 Le Petit Cheval

By Chateau Cheval Blanc

2004 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux

Nestled within the prestigious Right Bank appellation of Saint-Émilion, the 2004 Le Petit Cheval from Château Cheval Blanc stands as a testament to the finesse achievable in a Bordeaux vintage that initially promised challenge, yet delivered charm. The year 2004 was marked by a peculiar dichotomy of conditions: an initially cool and wet August gave way to a splendidly warm and dry September. This mercurial weather pattern etched an indelible mark on this vintage.

Refined Complexity, Deft Investment

The vintage expression of 2004 is distinguished by its palatial tapestry woven with red and black fruits - a juxtaposition that echoes the climatic dance of that year. On pouring, one is immediately greeted by the subtlety of ripe blackberries and cherries, evoking the warm September harvest. Earthier undertones arise next, a nod to the damp soils of an unusual August. Harmoniously integrated tannins reflect well-judged vinification practices, ensuring this wine maintains its structure while unfurling its maturity.

An Opulent Oenological Offering

This investment-worthy second wine from Château Cheval Blanc has ripened into a lustrous gem, admired for its approachable sophistication. The delicate herbal notes whisper of Cabernet Franc's hand in the blend, while Merlot confers plumpness and a plush mouthfeel, coaxing out reminiscences of tobacco and soft leather proper to Saint-Émilion's limestone terrains.

The 2004 Le Petit Cheval does not bellow; it mesmerizes with an understated allure that captivates seasoned palates. It's an articulate oeuvre from Château Cheval Blanc, bearing the hallmark balance between opulent fruit and noble structure that investors seek. Approachable now, yet promising further evolution, this vintage encapsulates the very essence of astute wine investment — pleasure entwined with potential.

As we reflect on the storybook resolve of 2004 in Bordeaux's challenging tapestry that year, Château Cheval Blanc’s offering confirms that true beauty often resides not within perfection but in graceful adaptation. The 2004 Le Petit Cheval lingers long on both the palate and in memory, much like the promise it holds for collectors and investors alike.

This is a very impressive Le Petit Cheval, in fact so good that perhaps it jaded my impression of the Grand Vin. A lovely damson, blueberry nose with a slight savory note. The palate is quite backward with fine density, cohesion and poise. Seamless tannins with a slight bitterness on the finish. Excellent. Tasted April 2005.

The well-made second wine, the 2004 Le Petit Cheval, is softer and fruitier than the Cheval Blanc, with loads of crunchy cherries intermixed with dried herbs, spice, and toasty oak. A blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc (30,000 bottles produced), it will drink well for 7-10 years.
