1998 Troplong Mondot from Chateau Troplong Mondot, Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux

The venerable 1998 vintage from Chateau Troplong Mondot is a beacon of the Saint-Émilion appellation, an embodiment of the unique and majestic terroir that has captured the hearts of many an oenophile. In a year swathed in climatic benevolence, this vintage has emerged as one of the most esteemed iterations, eloquently speaking of its birth-year's generosity.

Decoding the 1998 Vintage's Essence

The 1998 growing season offered Bordeaux's right bank a cascade of optimal conditions. Ripe with opportunity stamped by an almost divinely ordered symmetry between warmth and rainfall—a harmony which Chateau Troplong Mondot expertly transcribed into their eponymous vintage. From within its deep garnet depths swirl aromas redolent of succulent plum and blackberry compote, interlace with a tapestry of tobacco, truffles, and a certain Proustian sous-bois which remarkably holds still twenty years thence.

Genteel Yet Assertive: A Paragon for Investment

Structured with a finesse that belies its profound intensity, the palate unearths layer upon layer of ripe tannins—a topic of delight among connoisseurs—ensuring that this vinous charge will gracefully endure for years, even decades to come. An investment in the 1998 Troplong Mondot is one that echoes the sagacity of tending to land with the intent of legacy—its sustained finish unfurling like a regal banner across time's horizon.

While youth might assure boldness, age grants wisdom—the '98 vintage is approaching a stage where both convene. Enthused anticipation surrounds each uncorking as the wine dispenses knowledge of its evolution; providing integral insights to collectors and investors looking to enrich their cellars with bottles boasting both historicity and potential capital growth.

A Concluding Note on the 1998 Troplong Mondot

In sum, my friends, this 1998 Troplong Mondot bears the torch for what makes Saint-Émilion wines revered. One of nature's remarkable episodes captured momentarily then kept like a secret whispered only through corks and crystal. For those seeking both pleasure and prosperity in bottled form, the luminosity found within these Bordeaux confines ensures that here lies an investment wooing the palates now as assuredly as it promises rewards hereafter.

A fabulous effort, this sleeper of the vintage may turn out to be the finest Troplong-Mondot since the 1990. The black/purple-colored 1998 exhibits floral, blueberry, blackberry, licorice, vanillin, and truffle-like aromas (or is it charcoal/graphite?). Dense, full-bodied, and pure, yet extremely fresh and elegant, this beautifully focused wine needs 3-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025.

The '98 Troplong has a deep colour with little signs of ageing. The nose is rich and opulent with glossy ripe dark cherries, creme de cassis and a hint of mushroom
