2016 Meursault Genevrieres from Domaine Coche-Dury, Burgundy, France

Within the hallowed halls of Burgundian white wines, the 2016 Meursault Genevrieres from Domaine Coche-Dury holds a commanding presence. Reflecting upon this particular vintage, it is imperative to understand both lineage and legacy, as it emerges from an era in Burgundy that challenged both vine and vintner.

The Alchemy of Adversity and Elegance

The year 2016 was marked by climatic hurdles in Burgundy, with frost and mildew reducing quantities but unexpectedly enhancing the quality of grapes that survived. In this crucible, Domaine Coche-Dury manifested a Meursault Genevrieres that exemplifies resilience and concentration. The energetic stoniness intertwined with the symphonic essence of hazelnut and white peach are hallmarks expertly encapsulated in this striking Chardonnay.

A True Testament to Terroir

Domaine Coche-Dury's meticulous cultivation practices and the exceptional terroir of Genevrieres coalesce into a vintage where focus meets intensity. The palate benefits from an aristocratic structure, presenting a taut line of acidity that promenades through flavours reminiscent of spiced pear and brioche - a testament to its judicious ageing capability.

Indeed, the 2016 Meursault Genevrieres showcases the solar radiance Rabourcin experienced in late summer, imprinting upon the wine a warm clasp that melds with its cooler mineral undertone to create a dazzling contrast markedly present in this harvest.

As investors look to bolster their portfolios with white Burgundies of undeniable pedigree and potential for appreciation, the 2016 Meursault Genevrieres from Domaine Coche-Dury distinguishes itself. It is a confluence of craftsmanship under duress—a vintage that speaks volumes about the kinetic potential energy resting within its luminous core. Such wines do not merely sit idly; they rise to meet their destinies as nurturing assets that accumulate value both in cellar and glass.

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières was somewhat protected from the frosts by some early morning cloud cover, and the resulting wine is superb, offering up aromas of green orchard fruit, citrus zest, hazelnut cream, blanched almonds and drawn butter. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and satiny, with excellent depth and dimension, tangy acids and chewy structuring extract, displaying appreciably more amplitude and volume than the Caillerets and Rougeots that preceded it. Elegant but powerful, this is a beautiful Genevrières.
