By Domaine Coche-Dury

2002 Meursault Rougeot from Domaine Coche-Dury, Burgundy, France

The 2002 vintage in Burgundy stood as a beacon of excellence in a challenging early millennium period, with cooler climatic conditions playing the thoughtful conductor in an orchestration of ripening grapes. In this concert of the elements, the 2002 Meursault Rougeot from Domaine Coche-Dury achieved a remarkable symphony of balance and composure that has enraptured investors and connoisseurs alike.

Precise Climatic Interplay: A Vintage to Remember

As the seasons unfolded, 2002 revealed a pivotal coolness that extended the maturation period and bestowed each grape cluster with an unhurried, meticulous refinement of acidity and sugar. It was within this prolonged ripening cadence that the Rougeot parcel, renowned for its eloquent expression of Meursault's terroir, found its voice. The wines, thus nurtured by providential weather, unveiled a complexity seldom rivalled.

Investment-worthy Nuance: The 2002 Meursault Rougeot

Upon tasting, one cannot help but be enveloped by the seductive bouquet, where one discerns whispers of nougat and almond entwined with the stone fruit character that is so indicative of the region's Chardonnay. The palate follows suit with layered minerality—a hallmark of the Rougeot climat— which unfurls amidst a latticework of citrus and white flowers. Elegant oak integration serves as a harmonious companion to the fruit's purity.

The wine's composition—unyielding in structure yet graced with a supple finesse—holds promise for longevity. It remains a visceral reminder of Domaine Coche-Dury's venerable craftsmanship, weaving time and nature into an enological tapestry.

Concluding Notes on A Timeless Investment

In sum, the 2002 Meursault Rougeot from Domaine Coche-Dury epitomises not only one of Burgundy's most exceptional vintages but also stands as testimony to wine investment at its most cerebral and sensual. The offering is as intricate as it is durable; its layers revealing themselves gradually over years—even decades. For keen collectors seeking both celebration and savvy fiscal appreciation, this wine graciously answers the call.

The hugely spicy 2002 Meursault Rougeots is a fat, medium-bodied wine that retains outstanding purity, focus, freshness, and detail. Loads of pulp-laden pears as well as apples are intermingled with smoky, spicy oak in this boldly flavored effort. Drink it over the next 9 years. Note: Jean-Francois Coche labels five different wines as “Meursault,” the Vireuils-Dessous, Vireuils-Dessus, La Barre, Narvaux, and from an as-yet-unnamed parcel (it may be called “Chaumes”) on the top of the Meursault hill that belongs to his son Raphael. His US importer, Kermit Lynch, generally purchases only the Meursault from the Narvaux vineyard, but there is no way of knowing which “Meursault” is being purchased from the gray market.
