The 2005 Meursault Rougeot from Domaine Coche-Dury, Burgundy, France

The storied vineyards of Burgundy are no strangers to wine connoisseurs and investors alike. Yet, even among such revered lineage, the 2005 Meursault Rougeot from Domaine Coche-Dury emerges as a vintage that garners unanimous applause for its exemplary character shaped by the unique climatic conditions of its year.

A Testament to Terroir and Time

Domaine Coche-Dury, synonymous with meticulous winemaking, reached a zenith of balance and complexity with its 2005 Meursault Rougeot. A testament to both terroir and time, the vintage encapsulates the essence of the remarkable growing season that blessed Burgundy in 2005. A year noted for its warmth and ample sunshine, yet devoid of the extremes that can mar the intricacies of such refined chardonnay expressions.

Vintage Virtuosity: An Investment in Elegance

The wine exhibits an extraordinary richness, a characteristic underwritten by the judicious ripeness of fruit that not only remained intact but was accentuated thanks to a cooler September. Swirling in the glass, it reveals a bouquet bristling with vivacious citrus notes, complemented by an opulent yet painstakingly precise mineral streak honed through ageing in French oak.

On the palate, depth and elegance reign supreme. Fresh Almond nuances dance amongst layers of stone fruit and honey, lending gravitas without diminishing the charming youthful vitality that persists more than a decade post-vintage. The finish is both lingering and ethereal – a sensory echo that etches this Meursault Rougeot firmly in memory.

Prudent investment collectors have long recognized the worthiness of securing allocations from Domaine Coche-Dury's small production runs. With vintages such as 2005 standing as towering achievements in viticulture, it is little wonder that these bottles are fiercely coveted subtly enriching portfolios with their inherent value appreciation potential over time.

My love affair with Jean-François Coche's superb 2005 Meursault Les Rougeots continues, and every time I taste this wine, I think I have underrated it. Opening in the glass with lovely aromas of pears, buttered toast, citrus oil, sesame and flowers, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, succulent acids and chalky structuring extract, concluding with a long and mineral finish. This is always a great cuvée, but in 2005, something special happened here.
