2016 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Burgundy, France

The 2016 vintage in Burgundy was one of heroic feats amid climatic caprice. In particular, the 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Domaine des Comtes Lafon morphed adversity into a triumph that deftly encapsulates the spirit of its terroir. The story of this vintage is threaded through each sip, much as a tapestry tells a tale through its artful weave.

Expressions of Elegance and Resilience

Burgundy's 2016 growing season defied expectations, marked as it was by unpredictable weather patterns that culminated in frost and hail. And yet, the resilience of the vineyards came forth in the form of limited but exceptional grapes. Domaine des Comtes Lafon, with their astute and time-honed viticulture practices, crafted a wine that whispers of these trials while never forgetting to sing of the land's inherent grace.

Eloquent Testimony to Terroir

This Meursault 1er Cru Charmes embodies that singular dance between nature's whimsy and the vigneron's mastery. There is a beguiling duality to the 2016 vintage—an interplay between the richness promised by Meursault and an unexpected vibrancy lent by the year's low yields. Hints of hazelnut caress the palate, a nod to classic Burgundian elegance, while lively citrus zest and nuanced minerality allude to a fortitude born of arduous conditions.

The bouquet offers an ensemble of aromatics that are as intricate as they are integrated —a mélange where stone fruits conspire with blossoms and grounded by the earthiness befitting its lineage.

A Wine Investment Worth Its Mettle

Wines such as this 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Domaine des Comtes Lafon stand out not only for their current sensory pleasures but also for their investment potential. This vintage, in particular, possesses all the hallmarks one anticipates in terms of depth and staying power—it is a wine poised for graceful aging. As it matures, it will no doubt unfurl additional layers, making it an astute addition to any serious collector’s portfolio.

In conclusion, this compelling white wine captures both moment and memory; an articulate testament to a challenging year turned victorious. Savouring this elixir is akin to partaking in a whispering gallery where each echo holds an anecdote of survival, expertise, and eventual exuberance—an extraordinary vintage waiting to be relived with each uncorking.

Offering up notes of lime oil, tart Anjou pear, peach kernels and sesame that are delicately framed by a judicious touch of new oak, the 2016 Meursault Les Rougeots is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with more texture and a denser, more blocky profile than the other village wines in the cellar this year, displaying considerable extract and a long, stony finish. Raphaël Coche notes that no one in his family can remember a time when Rougeots was so badly frosted, adding that neighboring Chevalières was entirely wiped out.
