By Domaine des Comtes Lafon

1999 Chevalier Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive, Burgundy, France

In the pantheon of white Burgundian splendour, the 1999 Chevalier Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive asserts a formidable position. My relationship with this vinous treasure has stood the test of time, tracing its lineage and evolution with an intimate understanding of its terroir-driven magnificence.

Legacy and Terroir: A Superlative Combination

Domaine Leflaive, a name synonymous with excellence in Burgundian viticulture, has meticulously nurtured their vineyards to achieve an eco-friendly approach known as biodynamics. This philosophy was well-established at the estate by 1999 – a practice that surely played a role in crafting the profundity of character found in that year's Chevalier Montrachet.

Praiseworthy Pedigree in a Challenging Climate

The climatic conditions of 1999 threw challenges towards Burgundy's vintners, with a summer marked by heat punctuated by rappelling storms. Yet, as the golden-hued nectar bears witness, Domaine Leflaive negotiated these hurdles with aplomb.

Two decades on, this vintage expresses an ethereal bouquet of toasted hazelnut and freshly kneaded brioche, latticed atop layers of lush citrus and ripe stone fruits. The palate is embraced by a reverent acidity – undoubtedly the linchpin of this wine's now legendary longevity. Beneath this vestige of vitality lies a delicate complexity draped in a creamy texture that very few other vintages or rivals can parade as gracefully.

This 1999 Chevalier Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive has transitioned masterfully in the bottle. For the astute investor and collector alike, its current state represents both a triumph of enological artistry and an embodiment of an exceptionally investable vintage.

Spices, gravel, and smoke can be detected in the nose of the 2001 Meursault-Perrieres. It does not have the flesh, opulence, and depth of Lafon’s finest 2001s, but it delivers loads of purity and elegance. Spiced minerals and candied lemons make up this delineated, refined wine’s character. Projected maturity: 2005-2010. Dominique Lafon is on fire, in a zone, on top of his game. He’s never made better wines, and he improves with each passing vintage.
