2008 Echezeaux Grand Cru from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Burgundy, France

The transcendent character of the 2008 Echezeaux Grand Cru from the storied cellars of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair attests to the remarkable resilience and finesse that only Burgundy's tapestry of terroirs can bestow. A Test of Patience: The 2008 Vintage

The narrative of 2008 in Burgundy is one of a grower's fortitude and the endowment of nature's last-minute benevolence. A cool, damp summer gave way to a September replete with North winds and soaring sunshine—an eleventh-hour reprieve that salvaged the vintage. The resultant wines, like the 2008 Echezeaux Grand Cru from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, showcased a vibrancy and tension rare in more opulent years.

Investment Merits of an Introspective Vintage

Burgundian to its core, this Grand Cru charms with an intricate dance of power and elegance—a duality which defines the most collectible specimens of Pinot Noir. Opening with a bouquet garnished with hints of game, dark cherries, and forest floor, it progresses to deliver on the palate layers of intricately woven fruit and spice textures. Despite its complexity, there's an underlying freshness here—a red thread that speaks volumes about its longevity and collector appeal.

An opportunity for the astute investor arises to partake in this narration of nuance; to acquire an example not only of storied provenance but of esthetic dexterity—one might even say investment serendipity. Defying initial trepidations of its birth year, the 2008 Echezeaux Grand Cru from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair now stands tall among its temporal peers as a lesson in enological endurance.

To sip this nectar is to comprehend a fabled terroir's ability to transcend climatic capriciousness—the seasoned investor would do well to take note.

Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2008 Echézeaux Grand Cru is the first great Echézeaux under Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. Tasted twice in recent weeks, there is wondrous delineation and poise on the nose, real mineralité and sophistication. The palate is taut and crisp on the entry with blood orange, maraschino and marmalade that fans out in confident fashion on the vital finish. What a superb Echézeaux - it even shadows the 2009! The first great Echézeaux under Louis-Michel. Tasted June 2015.
