Perched within the hallowed terroir of Vosne-Romanée, the 2002 vintage has gracefully ascended to a pinnacle in the pantheon of collectible wines. It is a wine with an impeccably tailored structure and concentration attributable to benign climatic conditions favouring both fruit set and maturation. Pivotal was the measured warmth and light precipitation during the growing season that helped fashion a wine of both subtlety and vigour.

The palate unfurls with an intricate tapestry of red and black fruit notes, draped over an underpinning of finely wrought tannins. Notions of vibrant cherry, spiced plum, and a whisper of truffle in this 2002 reveal the deft craftsmanship at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. With time, these elements have married harmoniously, creating an eminent complexity that resonates with sanctity.

Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2002 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château has a light, fragrant dried rose petal, strawberry and tangerine-scented bouquet that gently opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with finer tannin than the first two vintages and a keener thread of acidity. This still has respectable tension and there is an attractive piquancy on the finish that lingers in the mouth. This has aged very well and is worth seeking out. Tasted June 2015.
