The prestigiously small-scale vineyards of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair have, in the 2005 vintage, crafted a Vosne Romanee La Colombiere of such exceptional pedigree that it commands the attention of connoisseurs and investors alike. As the years pass, the 2005 Burgundy vintage has solidified its reputation; it is a year that generational tales are woven upon.

Exquisite Narrative of a Celebrated Vintage

In a performance that underscores both rarity and profound craftsmanship, the 2005 Vosne Romanee La Colombiere from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair emerges as the epitome of balance and finesse. The unique conditions of 2005, with its extended, sun-drenched autumn in Burgundy, allowed for grapes to reach optimal ripeness, fostering a concentration of flavour while retaining the region's heralded acidity.

On approaching this wine, one is greeted with an aromatic ballet where violet incantations pirouette around core themes of red cherry and well-integrated oak. On the palate, there unfolds a sumptuous tapestry of spice-laden red fruits – think cherries steeped in cinnamon – all delivered with an elegance that can only be borne from the Vosne Romanee terroir.

The structure of this wine is testament to the might of 2005; tannins, while present, are sculpted rather than assertive, proffering longevity without overshadowing the symphony of subtle complexities that play upon the tongue. Such precision suggests an ageing potential that can only invigorate one’s wine investment portfolio.

A Testament to Timelessness

The 2005 Vosne Romanee La Colombiere from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair resonates with undeniable quality across every sensory measure. This vintage has reached a stage where its narrative is one of developing nuance rather than bold declaration; a story to be savoured hereafter. For those discerning investors searching for cornerstone bottles within their collections, this expression from Burgundy serves not merely as a celebration of enological excellence but as a beacon – illuminating the inherent value found in such profound vintages.

The 2005 Vosne-Romanée la Colombière has a rustic and meaty nose that feels fully mature, a touch of wild mushroom developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gaminess on the entry, a little feral and quite simple on the finish. I just feel that the terroir has caught up with this wine and pulled it back down, disallowing it to mature with the same assuredness as a premier cru might. I would drink this sooner rather than later. Tasted April 2015.
