In the echelons of distinguished Burgundian terroirs, a wine that repeatedly piques the interest of fine wine investors is the 1999 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques from Domaine Fourrier. A vintage shaped under the expert hand of Jean-Marie Fourrier, this particular bottling bears witness to an outstanding year for Pinot Noir in the revered Burgundy region.

Reflection of a Remarkable Year

The close of the millennium brought with it a memorable growing season in Burgundy, characterised by an optimal climatic balance that fostered gradual ripening and preserved acidity. Notably, this poised equilibrium yielded wines with substantial ageing potential, eminently investable attributes for connoisseurs seeking to diversify their portfolios.

Embodiment of Elegance and Complexity

In its youth, the 1999 vintage from Domaine Fourrier presented as a tightly wound tessellation of fruit and minerality. As the wine has matured, time has unfurled its complexities and it now showcases an aromatic palette where fresh red cherries entwine with autumnal forest floor and a whisper of spice. On the palate, one encounters a resplendent structure that still carries vivacity—a hallmark of Fourrier's noninterventionist approach—matched with supple tannins and a finish that melodiously lingers, urging one to contemplate its layered nuances.

To converse on investment value without acknowledgment of this wine’s drinking pleasure would be remiss; its composure in bottle suggests that it will provide both financial astuteness and palatal delight.

Veritable Vintage Investment

Investors searching for a quintessential example of 1999 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques for their cellars need look no further than this offering from Domaine Fourrier. With each passing year, the wine divulges more about its storied origins while promising additional chapters yet to be savoured by those with discerning tastes.

In summary, this vintage not only encapsulates the essence of Gevrey Chambertin's distinguished Clos St Jacques but also stands as a testimony to the storied craftsmanship at Domaine Fourrier—a synthesis rich în history and ripe for investment.

It is always a pleasure to revisit the wines of Jean-Marie Fourrier, especially those amidst their drinking plateaus. The 1999 Clos St. Jacques is drinking beautifully at the moment. It has an understated bouquet that needs coaxing, eventually revealing lovely leather and musky scents that complement the ebbing brambly red fruit. The palate is well-balanced and perhaps not as precise as the 1999 Clos St. Jacques from Rousseau, but it is very harmonious and composed with a crisp, slight tart finish. A point. Tasted June 2013.
