Standing as a testament to the formidable character of a somewhat challenging year, the 2008 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques from Domaine Fourrier reveals the triumph of terroir and talent over temperamental weather. This vintage mirrors a ballet between resilience and grace under the deft stewardship of Jean-Marie Fourrier.

2008: A Vintage Carved by Nature's Whim

The 2008 season in Burgundy was one of cool contrasts, as winemakers contended with a late flowering, an essentially cool, damp summer and an unexpectedly generous September sun; a climatic rollercoaster dictating a meticulously timed harvest. The conditions culminated in producing wines with fresh acidities and vividly defined fruit characteristics — a trait that is expansively demonstrated in the 2008 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques.

A Distillation of Gevrey Chambertin Complexity

The exquisite finesse of this particular wine is the result of Domaine Fourrier's unyielding commitment to expressing purity of place. It is precisely this dedication that brings forward investors seeking to delve into bottles that resonate with the soul of their earth. On the palate, this ruby-hued elixir casts beams of crisp red berry fruits interlaced with an undercurrent of minerality, enigmatic spice notes, and a delicate hint of floral lift — hallmarks of Clos St Jacques' enthralling diversity within its savoured sips.

The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques engages all of the senses with its cool, mineral-laced fruit and expressive bouquet. This shows marvelous tension and energy, not to mention fabulous overall balance. It could not be more different in style than the 2009 tasted alongside it. Both are fabulous, though. The 2008 is one of the more backward wines of the vintage and will require considerable patience. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2033. Count me among the Burgundy fans who are thrilled Jean-Marie Fourrier chose not to pursue the career as a commercial airline pilot for which he studied. Fourrier began picking on September 17. In 2009 the fruit was destemmed. Cuvaison lasted around 14 days but Fourrier commented that he had an unusually high (50%) amount of shot berries, which had the effect of extending the fermentations for another week or so. The malos started and ended early, hence Fourrier decided to bottle early as well. Per his usual practice, Fourrier left the wines on the lees with no racking until the wines were prepared for bottling. On average the wines saw 20% new oak. I tasted all of the 2009s from bottle.
