By Domaine Rene Engel

1990 Grands Echezeaux from Domaine Rene Engel, Burgundy, France

The 1990 vintage from Burgundy remains vivid in my memory as a year that gave birth to many considerable wines, ones which have matured with grace and grandeur. Amongst those, the 1990 Grands Echezeaux from Domaine Rene Engel stands out as a landmark testament to the exceptional conditions of that season.

Distinct Elegance of a Celebrated Vintage

Nestled in the vaunted terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, the offerings of this historic year at Domaine Rene Engel are characterised by profound layers and an unforgettable structure. The season's serendipitous climatic conditions ensured that each bunch of Pinot Noir reached optimum ripeness, imbuing the 1990 Grands Echezeaux with a tapestry of complexity that was extraordinary even by the domain's high standards.

A Study in Sophisticated Balance

The bouquet exudes a seductive maturity, with entrancing aromas of macerated fruits interlaced with discreet hints of earth and truffle – a nod to the ideal interplay between fruit and forest floor that aficionados cherish in Grands Echezeaux wines. This interplay is pivotal not only for its sensory appeal but concurrent investment merit; fine wine investors find such distinct characteristics in vintages like this while pursuing wines for their portfolios.

On the palate, one is struck by the remarkable balance and finesse, the tannins mellowed yet precise, orchestrating a persistent finish that captivates. It bears the hallmark depth and silkiness expected from such regal provenance—a profile which only a domaine of Rene Engel's repute could nurture through its exemplary viticultural practices.

In conclusion, when one dissects the virtues of the 1990 Grands Echezeaux from Domaine Rene Engel, it is evident that this vintage not only encapsulates an era's pinnacle in Burgundy winemaking but also symbolises a consummate choice for discerning collectors seeking to embellish their repertoire with an exquisite investment piece.

Tasted at the Domaine Engel tasting in London, the 1990 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, which was tasted from magnum, is just a magnificent, regal, imperious wine. It unfolds with stunning red cherries, crushed strawberry, animal fur, black truffle and leather. When I returned after 30 minutes, there was a hint of brettanomyces, but in a positive sense, merely adding to its complexity. The palate is beautifully balanced with great body and outstanding balance, the richness of the growing season coming through with its rondeur. Yet, this wine is endowed with stunning precision and poise, concluding with a generous, flowing finish of brambly red fruit and mineral that is beguilingly harmonious. It is everything you seek from mature Burgundy at its peak. Tasted October 2016.
