2001 La Landonne

By Guigal

2001 La Landonne from Guigal, Rhone

In the pantheon of noteworthy vintages, the 2001 La Landonne by Guigal enters with formidable aplomb. In any seasoned oenophile's cellar, it may gleefully sport the badge of an essential Rhone acquisition. Drawing on four decades of personal experience, I can assert that Guigal's 2001 vintage is an exemplar of their craftmanship.

A Chrysalis Unfolds - the Unique Vintage

The year 2001 graced the Northern Rhone with a longer sun exposure and cooler nights, providing vines with an extended ripening period. The result was deeply concentrated, yet refined and balanced crops, from which this admirable Syrah hails.

A decade on, unwrapping the 2001 La Landonne unveils a captivating symphony that has matured to its prime; a unique blend of brooding elegance intertwined with charred oak and fruit-driven intensity.

An Oenophile’s Delight

The depth and complexity effortlessly reflected in each glass provide testament to Guigal's exceptional winemaking skills. Striking layers of black olive tapenade, white pepper, roasted herbs and cassis surf atop waves of silky tannins, framed by a ripe acidity that carries the symphony to a lengthy finale.

The 2001 style was further ushered into the limelight with La Landonne's vineyard's granitic soils. Their stone-ground persona added a distinct earthiness to the wine while underscoring the innate black fruit characteristics synonymous with top-tier Syrah.

Invest In A Star of The Rhone

The allure of investing in a bottle, or better yet, a case of the 2001 La Landonne lies in its ability to not only impress today but also promise astonishing possibilities for tomorrow. It aptly epitomizes what makes the Rhone Valley an attractive proposition in the wine investment arena.

The 2001 La Landonne by Guigal does not only make an illustrious addition to your cellar; rather, it allows you to partake in a vibrant history while savoring a piece of the future. With each sip, you are traversing Rhone's rich terroir, reacquainting yourself with a year that graced this region with optimal conditions and recognising Guigal's continued commitment to their craft.

Starting to show signs of maturity, the 2001 Cote Rotie la Landonne offers a complex, nuanced bouquet of spice, hints of oak, smoked meats and sweet dark fruit. This is followed by a full-bodied, classically styled Cote Rotie that has beautiful mid-palate density, solid acidity and a great finish. This is a classic version of the cuvee that will be in its prime for another decade, and evolve gracefully after that.
