The revered 2000 Lynch Bages from Chateau Lynch Bages stands as a testament to the remarkable vintage it heralds from – a year that bestowed upon Bordeaux a wealth of climatic graces. As a chronicler of vinous treasures, I have had the pleasure of tracking the evolution of this Pauillac heavyweight, witnessing its ascent to legendary status amidst the pantheon of fine wines.
Vintage Virtuosity: The Millennial Climax
The millennium vintage in Bordeaux, lauded for its near-perfect conditions, resulted in wines etched with poise and structure. The 2000 vintage of Chateau Lynch Bages captures this quintessence, displaying an intricacy that marries power with elegance - a dichotomy only the finest vintages can harbour. Two decades on, the wine’s tapestry shows no sign of fraying but instead reveals threads of complexity that continue to entwine with grace.
Terroir and Technique: A Convergence of Excellence
Pauillac's deep gravel beds ensured well-drained vines in 2000, contributing significantly to the concentration and purity of fruit evident in this vintage. A blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2000 Lynch Bages exudes the hallmark blackcurrant and cassis notes underscored by savoury tannins – a profile deftly sculpted by weather and winemaker alike. Time has layered nuances of cigar box and forest floor onto this canvas, embellishing an already resplendent portrait.
For the connoisseur or fine wine investor seeking to diversify their portfolio, the investment potential of 2000 Lynch Bages is palpable. It confidently straddles the line between peak drinking maturity and further ageing potential – a coveted trait that promises value appreciation in the years to come.
In sum, while many wines deliver potent reminders of their vintage's character, the 2000 Lynch Bages from Chateau Lynch Bages sings a rhapsody that resonates with Bordeaux afficionados and investors alike – not merely echoing but amplifying the virtues born from one of Bordeaux's most extraordinary vintages.

Beginning to open magnificently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. One of the all-time great examples of Lynch Bages, the 2000 is just beginning to drink well yet promises to last for another 20-25+ years.

Another wonderful 2000 coming out of its long sleep. It shows beautiful aromas of berry, tobacco, herb and spice that follow through to a full palate with round, textured tannins and lots of fruit. Drink or hold.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 2000 tasting in London. This is more taciturn on the nose than Pontet-Canet ‘00, but is well defined with some lovely savoury, chestnut and black truffle aromas developing in the glass. Touches of damp moss/lichen. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, gentle grip, foursquare but good weight, blackberry, graphite, leather and cedar, chewy towards the dry, structured finish. Very fine, perhaps a little broody and introverted at the moment. But great potential. Drink 2016-2040. Tasted March 2010.
