Embarking upon a vintage that has etched its name indelibly within the annals of Bordeaux's vinous heritage, the 1990 La Conseillante from Chateau La Conseillante emerges as a paragon of Pomerol elegance and depth. This exemplar of investment-grade wine mirrors the quintessence of an opulent year that favoured the Right Bank's complexity and charm.
Legacy of a Luminous Year
The growing season of 1990 in Pomerol was one graced with benevolent climes—a harmonious blend of warm days and cool nights—affording the Merlot dominated blends an ample stage to flourish. The result at Chateau La Conseillante was a wine that resonates with voluptuousness, layered with concentrated dark fruit depths and a kaleidoscope of secondary nuances now three decades in evolution.
An Investment Calibre Vintage
Tasted today, the 1990 La Conseillante captivates the senses; a coruscating ruby core hints at its unfaltering vitality. It unfurls an olfactory sonnet of black truffle, ripe plum, and hints of violet—a bouquet that neither tires nor wanes but deepens with each ensuing encounter. Upon the palate, it dances with an alluring blend of black cherry, licorice embrace, and the seductive allure of aged cigar box—an elegy to Pomerol terroir. The balance is immaculate, tannins mellowed to a whispering silkiness and an acidity which pirouettes gracefully throughout its remarkably sustained finish.
In the company of fine wines that merit discerning collectors' cellars, the 1990 La Conseillante stands tall; it articulates not just its vintage but also the vintage's favourable impact on fine wine investment trajectories. In reassuring its holders, this venerable expression of Bordeaux viticulture is a testament to time’s kind hand upon well-crafted elegance.
In Summation: A Testament to Time
The 1990 La Conseillante from Chateau La Conseillante elucidates the mergence of year, terroir, and human artistry into a liquid lore. It presents not just a drinking pleasure but an emblematic asset—an addition to any connoisseur's collection which brings gravitas and as a wise wine investment opportunity stands with reassuring majesty.

Scores and tasting notes
The only problem that the 1990 Château La Conseillante has faced is that it had to follow up the brilliant 1989. Here, tasted directly against the previous vintage, it seems more youthful in color than the 1989. The nose races out of the blocks, more precocious than I remember and yet never losing focus, offering kirsch, crushed violets and still that subtle marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannin. It offers wonderful black truffle, morels and mulberry fruit, as powerful as the 1989, albeit not quite with the same precision on the finish. It is the purity of the La Conseillante that wins you over time and time again, and I would not hesitate in enjoying this Pomerol over the next decade. It will never quite match the 1989, but hey, don't hold that against this beauty. Tasted January 2016.
