2001 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, Burgundy, France

The 2001 vintage in Burgundy has hailed much focus and admiration from connoisseurs and investors alike, with Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier's Bonnes Mares being a paragon amongst its peers. Crafted from a terroir laden with marlstone and clay, the unique characteristics of the 2001 growing season have bestowed this wine with an almost ethereal complexity.

Epoch of Elegance: The Unmistakable Charm of 2001

In the 2001 Bonnes Mares, one finds an exquisite synthesis of the year's climatic generosity. A challenging spring gave way to an idyllic summer and elongated autumn, allowing for meticulous grape maturation. This precise serendipity is encapsulated within each glass; a cornucopia of ripe cherry coulis entwined with undercurrents of wild thyme and delicate earthiness forming the backbone of this noble bottle. Its ageing potential is admirable, yet even two decades on, the 2001 vintage remains vibrantly fresh—a testament to the dexterity of winemaking and clime.

Vintage Vitality: A Rewarding Investment

Fine wine investment requires not only a nod to heritage but also an understanding of vintage variation. The 2001 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier exhibits an assured balance between muscular structure and ethereal grace—the hallmark of a wine worthy of patient cellarage or astute investment. This vintage continues to resonate deeply with those who seek to diversify their portfolio with wines that have both historical significance and ensured longevity.

With its nuanced expression—a tapestry of lush fruit and poised acidity—we find the 2001 Bonnes Mares to be a chronicle of nature's largesse, meticulously rendered by Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier's artisans. For those looking to enrich their collection with a touchstone from Burgundy's celebrated past, the distinction of this particular year crystallises in each decanted drop. A conjuring of time and place, it serves not only as a splendour to savour but as a judicious asset in any fine wine anthology.

The 2001 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is showing some maturation, with distinct bricking on the rim that is wider than I would have expected. The nose is soft and light, with scents of tomato vine and redcurrant. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity, backward at first and taking time to find a sense of harmony. It displays moderate depth, but frankly, it does not rank along side Frederic’s recent triumphs. A worthy Bonnes-Mares, but not a truly great one. Tasted November 2013.
