2007 Bonnes Mares
By Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier
2007 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, Burgundy, France
In the often unpredictable climate of Burgundy, the renowned 2007 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier stands as a testament to the exceptional capabilities of this historic region. Graced with an atypical growing season that challenged the vignerons, 2007 ultimately yielded fruit that was moulded into a magnificent spectacle by the astute hands at Domaine Mugnier.
A Narration of Climate and Craft
Foregoing the generic traits typical to many an esteemed Grand Cru, the 2007 vintage brings forth a unique profile that encapsulates both the nuanced terroir and the climatic aberrations of the year. An early start to the growing season was met with intermittent warmth ensconced within cool, damp conditions, leading to an August fraught with trepidation. Yet, in this crucible, Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier's prowess elevated the harvest into a composition of near alchemical quality.
The Distinct Symphony of 2007
This particular vintage emerges with a translucent ruby hue, which belies an aromatic density ripe with layers of well-integrated red fruits, a signature of the Bonnes Mares terroir. Notwithstanding its age, there is a youthful vibrancy in its earthy undertones and peppery nuances. On the palate, investors will appreciate its deft balance—firm yet resolved tannins dance alongside an acidity that provides longevity and promise for further maturation. Traces of cherry and subtle oak are cradled by a mineral finish that resounds with both elegance and a reflection of the unusual weather pattern it overcame.
As one delves into this honest expression of viniculture, it becomes apparent that the 2007 Bonnes Mares from Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier is more than a vintage; it is a narrative of adaptation, precision and reward for those with discerning tastes in fine wine investment.
Given its distinctive attributes set against other vintages in Mugnier's oeuvre, this 2007 offering is indeed an intriguing addition to any serious collection—a canvas painted with the brushstrokes of that year's climatic challenges and a vibrancy whispering of its potential longevity in cellar sanctuaries.

Scores and tasting notes
A concentration of wild tiny berries red and black seems to inform the nose and palate of Mugnier’s 2007 Bonnes Mares, with pungent brown spices, medicinal herbal concentrates, and game adding site-typical complexity. The compactness here seems to mirror the wine’s flavor concentration, and an underlying note of crushed stone lends a hint of austerity in the long, bittersweet finish. All in all, this is hardly a typical representative of its vintage, and I am willing to believe that its relatively unevolved but impressive personality presages a decade or more of fascinating potential. Frederic Mugnier’s 2008s – which I last tasted shortly before their March bottling – did not experience the exceptionally late malo-lactic transformation that characterized so many wines of that vintage. Yields were especially low thanks not only to vintage-typical millerandage, but – particularly in the case of Les Amoureuses – to the vines’ slow recovery from the shock of 2007 hail.
