2007 Proprietary Red
By Harlan Estate
2007 Proprietary Red from Harlan Estate, USA
Emerging from California's renowned Rutherford bedrock, the 2007 Proprietary Red by Harlan Estate is a testament to the unique topographical and climatic subtleties of this quintessential Napa Valley terrain.
An intoxicating dance between power and finesse
This vintage navigated the scattering rain showers of 2007 with aplomb, resulting in a wine that expresses remarkable tension between muscular energy and refined elegance. The rhythmic oscillation between focused acidity and potent fruit flavours means it is already showing beautifully but has the structure to appreciate over the next decade.
Alluring aromas of dark cherries, violets and a hint of cocoa introduce an opened bottle of this American beauty. The palate centres kingdom-like around opulent flavours of cassis, blackcurrant and liquorice, propped up by firm yet polished tannins that serve as a reminder of its underpinning strength.
From humble beginnings, an investment heavyweight
The vision of property developer Bill Harlan gave rise to Harlan Estate in 1984. Since then, Harlan's untiring pursuit of making world-class wine has cemented their position among fine wines from USA. The 2007 Proprietary Red, more than just another jewel in their crown, secures their reputation for consistently releasing investment-worthy vintages.
A new owner of this vintage will be drawn in by its robust character that is beautifully countered by an underlying grace reminiscent of classic Bordeaux reds. But this Californian hero stands on its own and doesn't need the Old World as a reference point. It articulates unequivocally what Napa Valley - free from the constraints found in many traditional winemaking regions - can achieve, given commitment, investment and a singular vision.
In conclusion, Harlan Estate's 2007 Proprietary Red is a profound demonstration of just what Californian excellence encapsulates: an adventurous spirit underlined by a stringent commitment to quality.

The prodigious 2007 Harlan Estate reminds me of a hypothetical blend of the 2002 with a touch of the controversial 1997. Dense plum/purple-colored with sweet aromas of barbecue smoke, blueberries, blackberries, cassis, licorice, hot rocks and subtle oak, it is a splendidly opulent, pure wine with a skyscraper-like texture as well as stunningly deep fruit that expands gracefully across the palate. The finish lasts nearly a full minute. Because of its overwhelming richness and sweet tannins, this brilliant wine seems to be approachable now, but I suspect further nuances and complexity will emerge after 4-5 years in the bottle. This wine will still be going strong at age 25-30. Like the offerings from its sister estate, Bond, these Harlan Estate offerings are uncompromisingly brilliant examples of Napa viticulture and winemaking at its finest. Kudos to proprietor Bill Harlan. Run by Bill Harlan, Harlan Estate’s debut vintage was 1990. The second wine culled out from this extraordinary estate’s barrels is called The Maiden, with a production generally under 2,000 cases,. Yet it often represents 50% of the estate’s production given the Draconian selection process employed at Harlan. Tel. (707) 944-1441; Fax (707) 944-1444
