Shanghai Fine Wine Dinner with Ch Smith Haut Lafitte & Ch Beau-Sejour Becot

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte

Since taking over in 1990, Daniel and Florence Cathiard have taken this classified Pessac estate to the next level. After two decades of serious investment, improvements in the winery and a change in winemaking philosophy, the wines here now outshine many of the top names from the more fashionable communes and are challenging for supremacy in the Graves. Their 2009 received a perfect 100 points from Robert Parker, for the first time, and we think the 2010 vintage is even better. The style of the wine is pure seductive fruit with a silky texture; the quality is undoubtedly exceptional. Praise has to go to Daniel and Florence for turning this good, but slightly underperforming estate into one of the finest in Pessac-Leognan.

Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot

Beau-Séjour Bécot is one of the leading 1er Grand Cru Classé 'B' properties in St. Emilion. The vineyard area extends 16.5 hectares with the grape varieties of 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the Grand vin, Château Beau-Séjour Bécot and the second wine, Tournelle de Beau-Séjour Bécot, there is a total annual production of 5,000 cases. The ubiquitous Michel Rolland is a consultant at Beau-Séjour Bécot and the wines, not surprisingly, are full-bodied, concentrated and rich with layers of seductive cassis-scented fruits and hints of smoky new oak.
